I haven't had time to read lately, but will find myself with some extra time in the coming weeks, and would like to use some of that time reading. Do you have any suggestions for good crime novels?

Hi Erin, I don't know if you prefer modern crime or classics. I enjoy crime novels very much, from Sherlock Holmes to the newer novels by Jeffery Deaver, Martha Grimes, Ruth Rendell, Anne Perry, Ed McBain and more.

You mentioned some of my favorites. One of the last ones I read was written by Ed McBain. I haven't heard of Jeffery Deaver, so I will have to look him up. Thanks a bunch!

I like Jeffrey Deaver novels too - can second a vote for that one but my fave author of the moment is David Baldacci, though I also enjoy Tami Hoag, Lisa Gardner and Patricia Cornwall :)

For maximum enjoyment, I would say go for a crime series where you can follow the main characters through several books and get to know them. There are lots to choose from. The Inspector Morse books by Colin Dexter are brilliantly written and quite intellectual without being overpowering, as are the Inspector Banks stories by Peter Robinson and the Dalziel and Pascoe series by Reginald Hill. The Inspector Linley novels by Elizabeth George are great for people who like a good long read, as all her books are about 2 inches thick! For a lighter touch and evocative descriptions of Edinburgh, I like the Bob Skinner and Oz Blackstone series by Quintin Jardine. If you like legal thrillers, go for anything by John Grisham. For period crime in wartime Britain, try the Inspector Troy books by John Lawton. Ann Perry's Inspector Pitt and William Monk novels are set in Victorian Britain, while Anne Granger's Mitchell and Markby series is set in modern day rural England - a sort of Agatha Christie bought up to date, where Mitchell is the amateur detective who helps the police. All of these series have lots of titles in them, and will keep you going for years!

Wow, thank you for all the great suggestions. I don't think I've read any of the books you mentioned. I now have a list of several. I appreciate that you took the time to respond. Thanks again :)

I am more into the classic types, so I would suggest Sherlock Holmes, or Agatha Christie's Pierrot novels.

Hi Erin, I just completed the latest book by PD James, The Private Patient. It is a very nice book, very beautifully written, interwoven the private lives of the detectives and thrill they felt when calling out to a crime scene. Even the thoughts of the victims, the murderer, the innocent people who were affected by the crime are written beautifully.
