I prefer to carry it myself. On a few occassions, I was trying on new bags while shopping, he carried it for me. At the look of him with a lady's handbag, I find he looked funny, I don't know, may be I'm not used to it.
Usually before walking out of the bags shop, I will take back my handbag. I know if I didn't get my handbag back from him, he would not mind carrying for me for the whole shopping trip.
Nowadays, it is very common to see men carrying ladies handbags, with a lady walking next to him of course.

If I want my hands free to take a look at something or try something on my boyfriend has no trouble with it. Otherwise I just carry my own bag because it has my stuff in it and I like to have it close by. I usually have a ton of junk in it, unless I take along a small handbag or purse like the one shown in the picture.
I made that handbag myself from an old fleece scarf

my girlfriend does not allow me to help her carry her bag because she says she doesn't want us to become one of those couples whereby the guy is laden down with all the goodie bags and hangbag and the girl is just walking and shopping at her own pace. further, she says its not very heavy anyway. so i do not do that and she doesn't let me to haha. :)

I think it comes down to a security issue. With men, they don't want to because they feel insecure about it. I never had a problem with it, I actually put it on my shoulder and make it fun, usually I get looks form people but I was having fun with it. When my children were still in diapers, I would bring the diaper bag everywhere and it looked a little like a purse.
