My wife and I are going on an Alaskan Cruse this summer, in August. Has anyone taken one of these cruses and do you have any advice? We would like to take some local excursions but there are so many and we would like some suggestions.

Oh cool!! I went on an Alaskan Cruise with my family - August of 2007. Which cities are you visiting? We visited Juneau (I don't think I spelled that right), Ketchikan, Sitka - and then we also got to visit British Columbia, Canada. It was very fun. Just a couple of notes; 1) There is copious amount of food in the ship - pace yourself. And visit the gym part of the ship if you must - otherwise, the pounds will pile. =P 2)Visit Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau (if you're visiting that city - it's GORGEOUS and it's one of the few that we have left). 3)Sea kayaking in Sitka - so much fun! And as long as you don't plan on tipping the kayak - you'll be fine! =) I'll post some pictures! =)

We will be taking the inside passage cruse with stops in Juneau, and Sakway, where we will dock. Did you take any of the train or bus tours? My wife and I are not up to Kayaking. She is limited to short walks due to back surgery. Any good places to visit in Juneau. Thanks for your help.

Hmmm.. there's a lot of walking involved - so be forewarned. Just pace yourself - as I'm sure she'll be fine. I was travelling with my grandmother - of course I didn't kayak with her. I went Kayaking with my dad. Grandma and mom went shopping at that time. Since you're limited, definitely do the bus tours. The train tours - just be aware that you might not have enough time or what-have-you. I'm sure you've done a lot of cruises (have you?) and you know the time limit and all that. The bus tours are well worth it - there's a place in Juneau - a park of some sort (Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure) - I'm fairly certain it's this one. They take you on a tour with their 50-acre botanical garden with GOLF CARTS. So not a lot of walking there. There are some - to see some great sites of the city. Like I said, it's all about pacing yourself. Don't feel pressured that you have to get somewhere to see it - it's EVERYWHERE. Definitely visit Mendehall Glacier - you don't have to make it out to the short hiking spots. Just visit the visitor's center -and it's more that sufficient. Great views! Have fun!!! =) Come back and tell us more about it.

I have never been on a cruise, but I would love to go on an Alaskan vacation. I think that one of my favorite plans was to make sure that we went on a whale watching excursion. I think that the wildlife in Alaska is some of the most exciting things about the area. I would also like to tour Anchorage so you might see if that is available too. Have a great trip and be sure to post here as to how the trip is.
