I was wondering if anyone has any tips on keeping fruit fresh for longer? I shop once a fortnight as we live in a rural area and find it hard to have fruit for that long. We all love fruit in our house (especially my youngest son) but I am finding it hard to have nice fruit after the first week. Please if you have any ideas or tips on keeping my fruits fresher for longer let me know, I will appreciate it a lot and so will my sons!

Fruits don't have a chance to spoil when I'm around. I like fruits and they get consumed, eaten long before they get a chance to spoil. Cheers!!

You sound like my 2 year old son - no fruit lasts long around him! LOL! We don't waste anything but I would like to not have to go a week without fruit all the time!

Yes, it is true that after one week fruit will not be as fresh as when it is first bought. But to me I have always kept fruits for more than two weeks and the fruits can still be edible. It is a must to keep fruits in the refrigerator at my home because the weather here is hot. The types of fruits which can last long are apples, oranges and pears. Melons can't be kept long once it is cut, so it is better to buy small sized melons so that once you cut it, you can finish it within two days the maximum. When you buy grapes, eat them within the first three days from the day you bought them. The same with strawberries, plums, kiwis, bananas, papayas and other soft and juicy fruits. These types of fruits cannot stay fresh for a long time. Pineapples can stay fresh as long as you don't cut it off and remember to keep it in the fridge. If you plan to eat the pineapple at the end of the two weeks, you should consider buying a green skinned pineapple so that by the time you want to eat it, it is just nice and ripe. The same with mango. Buy green skinned mango which has not ripen yet. And keep it in a dark but airy container until it is ripe or almost ripe (it depends on how you like your mango). I always put unripe mangoes in my rice container until it is just nice to eat. If you are not eating it, let it outside for one more day if it is almost ripe, but if it is already ripe, keep it inside the fridge or else it would turn bad. Bananas are like that too. Buy the green ones and keep them aired and don't wrap it with anything because it will ripen the bananas very quickly. But after it is ripe, quickly put it into the fridge because it can get rotten very easily.

Thanks for your response! We buy a lot of bananas as we all eat them, but my youngest son eats 2 a day as he loves them, so I buy a lot of green ones. I also buy kiwi fruit but I find they last for the 2 weeks most of the time, grapes last us around 5 days if they don't get eaten first, I buy some green and some ripe mangos and lots of strawberries but they are what we have the main problem with as my youngest loves them but we can never keep them more than a few days so he goes without for 1 1/2 weeks at a time.

I know this one is obvious so I wont expand on it: the frige. Something that really helps things like strawberries is to keep them in the crisper drawer and put a paper towel in there. The paper towel helps absorb the moisture to keep the fruit fresher longer. This also works great with things like lettuce to help keep it crisp. The only other thing that I can think of is to buy some of the fruit a little bit less ripe. Like buy bananas while they are still green. One fruit that I have found that does last a little bit longer is kiwi. Perhaps that would be a good one to have the second week. Sorry I couldnt be more help. Good luck!

Thank you for your response! You have helped me as I had never thought to put paper towel in with the strawberries - and that's the fruit I have the most trouble with as it's a favourite of my youngest son's and we can't keep them long! I keep most of our fruit in the fridge, apart from bananas as the smell it out & go black in the fridge. I agree with you that kiwis keep longer - we always have those in the fridge! One thing I was told some time ago was to wrap everything in newspaper in the fridge & it will keep twice as long...I had forgotten this until you gave me the tip about paper towel! Thanks again
