If What Miss California Said Was So Shocking, Why Didn't She Finish Last?

There's been a lot of media hype, tongues wagging, shocked expressions and calls for her removal since Miss California, Carrie Prejean, told the Miss USA judges that she personally did not believe in gay marriage. Perez Hilton, who asked the question of her, launched a vehement and shrill campaign against her for disagreeing with his personal views. Now they are all investigating some photos, taken of her when she was modeling which they pretend to be shocked about, with the goal of taking her crown.
But at the end of the pageant, there are five contestants. If one of them, at this stage, does something so egregious that the judges are left in shock, mouths gaping and afraid she just won't provide the right image for the pageant, you would think she would get fourth runner-up, or as far from Miss USA as possible. Instead, she got first runner-up, which means that she would take over if Miss USA becomes unable to perform her duties, etc.
The question itself is far more political and hotly debated than any they ask at these things. It was asked by a highly-visible gay blogger whose stock in trade is humiliating female celebrities. It seems unlikely that he was unaware of what her answer would be, so his shocked amazement is a bit overdone. It isn't as if these girls haven't been interviewed a million times by everyone long before they get to the final five.
So, if what Miss California said was so shocking, why didn't she finish last? The reason is clear. If she wasn't in such a high position, they could never make this much fuss about any of it. The media would not be reporting on it daily, no one would be snooping around for dirt on her, no one would really care that much. If the judges in a contest really dislike your attitude, you wouldn't come in second of five, you would come in last.
So what do you think? It sounds like a set-up to me.
