Does the 'J-factor' prevail amongst pets too?

My neighbor owns this plump cat of a few years. The cat can boast to have grown in the best of an environment. They've always treated her quite lovingly; sometimes even better than their only son lol! Last month or so, the cat gave birth to two cute kittens. Naturally, the owners started caring more about the young ones than the cat herself! (Imagine now the fate of the only son lol!) They used to feed them more, let them in places where the cat was never allowed to enter, caress them and also take care about their beds. As time passed by, the kittens grew older and can now stand on their own. The mother has abandoned them. However, my neighbors are complaining about a strange change in behavior of the mother cat. They say the cat grew envious of her own kittens and she was feeling sidelined because of them. And that is the reason why she's stopped coming frequently to their home. Also when they try to pick her up, she hisses or growls in a threatening way! Strange, isn't it? Do you feel the cat was really 'jealous'?
