I think it is a good thing as English does seem to be the universal language of business. By teaching young children English, any country will be likely to protect the economic safety of the country as doing big business means probably having to go international and that means being able to communicate effectively.

Only 6 years? That is not enough to ensure a competency in English. In Singapore, the schools teach all subjects in English, except for mother tongue. Most children learn English from the one year pre-school lesson, followed by 2 years kindergarden, then 6 years of primary school education, 4 years of secondary school education. AFter that they can choose to enter polytechnics for 3 years diploma course, or 2 years pre-university preparation course, followed by 3 to 4 years university. All lessons are conducted in English. Even then the command of English is not that good. I wonder how only 6 years of English lessons is enough to enhance career opportunity

I wouldn't say it's normal by American standards. We typically study a language for a few years in high school. The most popular is Spanish due to the proximity to Latin America and growing number of Spanish-speaking people here--it's helpful in the workplace too, though I would think not nearly as much as English is in other places. I think most students don't start until they're freshmen in high school. I think only two years is required in most places, but colleges usually look for 3-4 years of a foreign language. In other countries, I think your study of English is a little more typical than the way we study different languages. They usually start younger than we do here, focus on English in particular and for longer than we would, probably more like your 6 years. But as an American, I can't say just how normal your English-studying is from a world perspective.
