So I was sitting with a girlfriend chatting over dinner. This friend of mine, she is a vegetarian I am not. Anyway, passed the Bac-O's to her to sprinkle on her leafy salad and she reprimanded me - "vegetarians do not eat Bac-O's". I asked her why - it's not like it's made out of bacon?! It's bacon flavored. Just like the soy bacon and tofu hot dogs that this friend scarfs down - it's merely imitation. This lead to a very heated argument and now we are completely deadlocked. Now if she didn't like the flavor that's another story but to lump all to saying that this particular salad topping is off limits - well that's just mean. COULD VEGETARIANS EAT BAC-Os?!?!?! Now I totally respect everyone's views on why you are a vegetarian or vegan (and yes I do know the difference), for whatever reason it may be... how ever, I'm just asking ... if you eat bacon flavored soy what's the difference? They are made pretty much the same... Thanks!

I dont see why a vegetarian would not be able to eat BAC-Os. They are not meat. I juts looked in my cabinet lol and the container says artificially flavored bits. and on the back in bold print it says, 'contains soy ingredients'. I cant wait to read all other vegetarians responses so i know what the difference is between these soy bits and soy- anything else.

Some people are only happy when they can scold you for something. One of the main personality traits I see often among the morally superior is their extreme anger. In this case your friend is just being too stubborn to back down and admit she was wrong. She's amazingly wrong. Bac-os are not only made with soy and not bacon, but they are also Kosher, which means they contain no pork whatsoever. They are as vegetarian as her soy hotdogs. Maybe she didn't want to use them because the flavor of bacon is so addicting and tempting that she will become unable to continue being a vegetarian. Perhaps she is afraid of slipping out of the house in the middle night to go to the 24-hour grocery store to purchase pork products under the cover of darkness.

You know, I always tease about that she secretly eats Whoppers and slim jims when no one's looking. I have found an arby's wrapper in her car and she swears it's her brother's. I totally agree about those who like looking down on your from their high horse and I guess that's why the argument got as far as it did because she is one of those people who will argue for fun. She should be an attorney.

I just had a 1976 flashback to Larry Groce's "Junk Food Junkie" http://www.lyricsdownload.com/larry-groce-junk-food-junkie-lyrics.html Reading it now, it's more about junk food than meat, but there is a stanza ...

I think it depends on the brand; some contain bacon fat / renderings / grease and some are soy based with a powdered artificial flavor that is not derived from meat. You have to read the label and know what it means. That's about as bad as this girl I knew that was a hard core vegan. I made Jell-O Jigglers and dropped them off for everyone to enjoy and she ate about ten of them. She was clueless. I asked her why she got on my case about Tootsie Rolls (they contain milk) but yet she happily scarfed down Jell-O. Again, she was clueless. That's when I told her what gelatin is made from. The look on her face was priceless. Gelatin, unless otherwise specified, is made from collagen found in animal bones. Since it is an animal by product it is something that vegans won't eat. To this day I smile when I think about her preaching to everyone about the cruelty of animals etc etc etc yet she was so lackadaisical about her researching of foods that contain animal parts or by products. Enjoy those Bac-O's!!!

LMAO I could imagine - you should've taken a picture LOL. Oh, I'm going all out with this Baco's thing - it use to be a rare treat to get them because even though they are not real bacon, they're not the healthest thing in the world either. I'm going to make sure to find a baco's shirt to wear with my baco collection the next time she comes over. I love to instigate - I can be a brat too . :D Thanks for the response!

I was unable to find the ingredients to Bac-Os. Found lots of opinions, but no official list of what is in it. My first concern would be MSG, and secondly salt. There are different rules for different vegetarians (the biggest being dairy and/or egg products) but if I don't want to eat anything that is in Bac-O's for whatever reason, that is my prerogative. But then, she said, "Vegans do not eat Baco-O's?" - the world wide web has a lot of contradictions to that statement. But then, it has lots of contradictions, doesn't it?

I don't know what Bac-o's are but as a vegetarian I have fake bacon bits that are one hundred percent free of animal products. If it isn't meat and doesn't have any form of meat in it, then it isn't off limits and I would probably eat it. maybe your friend just has a thing against Bac-O's

I guess it’s your motive on why you are a vegetarian. Some people do not like even the taste of meat-which would make them detest bacos. Some people don’t eat anything that was once living, in which bacos are not technically off limits. Some people do it for dietary purposes to keep a tab on their fat intake and types of fat and such. These people probably do not want to eat bacos. I think technically since the definition of a vegetarian is –do not eat meat, bacos are okay to eat. But there are so many variations of eth vegetarians now that I think you can pretty much do whatever you want. Heck, I think I’ll even call myself a vegetarian for the day and eat a steak tonight because it is waiting for me and it is so so good.

I wasn't sure that Bac O's didn't contain bacon, but if they don't then I say no problem with eating them, not sure why your friend had a problem but I guess it's their mouth, their stomach, and their food... lol. Found this! http://www.veganessentials.com/catalog/organic-bacuns-bacon-bits-alternative.htm
