the new american bible renders god's pronouncement this way: by the sweat of your face shall you get bread to eat, until you return to the ground, from which you were taken; for you are dirt, and to dirt you shall return. god's declaration gives no hint that any part of adam survied his death. when adam died, adam the soul died. what say you?

Are you assuming then that the soul is also made of dirt? The bible clearly states in many places that the soul, or rather the spirit, is not part of the body. In fact, the spirit and the flesh war with each other. I think you omit several important points where the bible states that the spirit lives on and that little thing called the resurrection. So, no, the soul is not destroyed in the grave. The bible speaks of another place, gehenna or hell, where both body and soul can be destroyed.
