XMas ... Why do you use X?

I didn't pay attention to this until our religion teacher back in High School prohibited us to use X in "Christmas". She said, it's replacing "Christ" with an "X" which is true. I wonder where this X started, and if people use Xmas for this or any other reason.

now it would be easy, just think 'christ' then add 'mas'. that's where the word christmas originated anyway :)

Because they are just too lazy to write or type the whole word. Maybe they dont know the spelling of the word as well.

My mom says the same thing. She hates when people say XMAS. I never use X instead of Christ. After all, he is the reason for the season.

I try not to do that just because I don't like to. I think it commercializes Christmas even more than it already is. I also think that a lot of people use the "X" out of laziness.

i'd like to think laziness than them replacing christ :)
