Does love at first sight actually happen?

Well, scientists say that the answer to this ever-existing query lies in geneticists. In a study on fruit flies, American and Australian researchers have discovered that some males and females are more compatible than others at the genetic level. In their opinion, this compatibility plays an important role in mate selection, mating outcomes, and future reproductive behaviours. The researchers say that the experiments conducted by them have shown that before mating, females experience something called "genetic priming", which makes them more likely to mate with certain males over others. "Our research helps to shed light on the complex biochemistry involved in mate selection and reproduction," said Mariana Wolfner, Professor of Developmental Biology at Cornell University and the senior scientist involved in the study. She added: "These findings may lead to ways to curb unwanted insect populations by activating or deactivating genes that play a role in female mating decisions." For the study, scientists mated two different strains of fruit fly females to males either from their own strain or to males from the other strain. They noted the males with which females of each strain tended to mate, and then examined whether the females showed differences in behaviour soon after mating and in reproduction-related activities, such as how many offspring were produced and how many sperm were stored. They also analysed females' RNA to compare the genes expressed in females mated to males of different strains. It was found that despite observed differences in mating behaviours and reproduction activities in females mated to different strains of males, there were only negligible mating-dependent differences in gene expression between the groups. Based on their observations, the researchers came to the conclusion that genetic changes involved in mate choice and reproduction existed before mating began. The study has been published in the latest issue of the journal Genetics.

Yes I do believe in love at first sight. Because it happened to me before nd according to my girlfriend it happened to her too when she saw me. Lolz! Some easily get attracted to a person. And when you get attracted to a person there is some love that forms so it's love at first sight.

No there's no such thing as love at first sight... you have to think about what love is. Love is hard work, it takes commitment, sacrifice and time.. there's no way you can really LOVE them on first sight. A lot of people get lust mixed up with love... and time will tell the difference with that. Love at first conversation, first date?? maybe... but not at first sight.

I don't believe in love at first sight but i came through this article on a news site, and am a science student so scientist proving this is interesting. Practically there will be quite a few that can go well with love at first sight, like you said it needs time to grow the seed of love between two persons. Thanks for the response.

I do believe in first sight. I think when you meet someone that you are supposed to be with you just know it. When I met my boyfriend years ago my heart just fell, but we didn't date for two years, we just finally go together after finding out how we felt for each other LOL.

Dear Healer I personally dont feel that there is anything called love at first site. Because thats not possible without even knwoing anything about him / her. Yes i would call it as atteaction which we might mistake as love because 99% of us actually dont really know what is the true love like. Even i dont know. But then as we talk and be with that person we say it to be infation which we very often think to be love. Love is very different from what we actually feel. Since i dont really know much about love i wont speak on it. But ya I wouldnt believe in love art first site.

I agree to your point in a way as the word attraction is more appropriate than love. Thanks for the response

I do believe in love at first sight. When I met my hubby and love of my life, I was dating someone else and worked at a bar. He was in there with some friends and when I saw him, he really stood out from a huge place full of pretty hot guys. He is very cute, but there was something else for sure. He said that he felt the same way about me. There was chemistry that was in the air I guess. We have been together over 10 years. I never told the boyfriend at the time that I met the love of my life, just that I wanted to date others..lol There was only 1!

Loved the information you provided. Very interesting. On a personal note, I don't believe in Love at first sight. I think it takes a lot more to love a person. In case of species whose brain is not as well formed as humans, I think the study holds good. But humans, because of their intellectual ability and well developed brains do use their mind a lot more.So i think in case of humans Lust/Physical attraction at first sight is what really happens.People who end up finding love this way are plain luckey. :)

I strongly believe of love at first sight cause that was i felt with my ex-bf when i first saw him almost a decade ago already and until now i have still special feelings for this guy even if i have not seen him for over 9 years and we have both our own family. Now i just treasure our good memories for almost 3 years, nothing bad with this as long as it don't affect negatively to people who is important to me.

i'm a person who don't believed in love at first sight because it is only an infatuation neither love is blind because love is never blind it sees but it doesn't mind... :) but with the two the closest to love would be love at first sight because it give a certain possibility that through constant admiration, one can really feel real love...

I do believe love at first sight do exist though I doubt it'll happen to me. I usually won't remember someone that I only meet once. It's a touch and go situation for me. My friend was in this kind of love. Though it doesn't last but she did meet a guy and fall in love once look at him. I think it's more like a tale since I never see one myself. Their relationship ended due to unavoidable reason but it still prove that first sight can spark the romance too.

I do not believe on love at first site, its a reaction which is instigated by your hormones when you see someone beautiful! As you mentioned its all realted to mating not about caring. Love is about caring for the person you love, you cannot care for someone whom you have just seen once. It requires some time to be spent to be in love with that person

Well, I personally don't believe in love at first sight. Yes, you may get very attracted to someone at first glance maybe because of his/her charm. But that doesn't mean you're already in love. Love is a very strong word. You can't just say you love someone just because she's pretty or he's handsome. Love sees through the heart, not through the eyes.
