The one room that needs the most work...

I swear some days it seems like it would be easier to just pack up and move instead of doing all the work that needs to be done around my house. We bought a fixer upper 4 yrs ago, and we are still working on it.... granted we are doing the work ourselves and we are on a very tight bugdet.... so when we get an extra 30.00 or 50.00 we try to do something small...
We did the kitchen floor the first year we were hear ... it was a gift from my aunt as a housewarming present... all the tiles, only now it really needs to be redone...and that is along with the other stuff we havent started yet!!!
so what area of your house needs the most work?? will you do the work yourself?? or will you hire it out?

We are lucky. Our house only has a few rooms left upstairs that need to be painted. I would love to have some stuff completely redone (can we say meld the dining room and the kitchen to make one LARGE kitchen??), but that simply is not going to happen in this house.
I would have to say that we have already done the hardest room in the house. When we bought our house, it had a finished basement, but there was dingy carpet down there and white walls. It was nasty and drab. So we got a quote from Lowes on what it would cost to buy and have them install tile down there. Over $3000 bucks!!! We were floored!! So, we went to a tile warehouse, got multi-colored slate tile on sale for $0.99/sq.ft. and installed it ourselves. Neither of us had ever done it before, so it was a project! My husband did all of the tiling, and when he was away on business, I surprised him by doing all of the grouting while he was gone. It was quite messy and labor-intensive, but we did it. We painted the walls, tiled the floor, and were good to go! It doesn't even look like the same space.
I also have done some painting techniques on some of the walls in my house, which was also kind of labor intensive. The leather-look of the walls in the kitchen took forever, but it looks kind of Mediterranean and it is really pretty. The streaking stain on the walls in the guest room in the basement was not as hard, but still harder than just painting.
This is my first house, and I'm loving doing the work myself. It is a real sense of accomplishment when you finish a project and look at the fruits of your labor. :)

oh I agree, we love to see what we have done so far and when we do something little and it makes such a difference we are always so pleased... its amazing that when you change a light fixture for 30.00 or buy some paint on sale for under 20.00 and change the room with little things like that it makes a world of difference and we love it too!!

You too! Have fun and good luck with the neverending updating to your house! I know we will be updating things forever. By the time we finish the first round, we'll be ready to start changing things again (or I will be, rather. Hubby doesn't like change).

We don't have a house yet, and we plan to buy new so we can move the (doublewide) house straight from the manufacturer to the land we've picked out. So with that being said, if we did have a house I think we'd do it ourselves or hire people we trust that we are also friends with rather then hire out to people we don't know, or don't trust, etc.

Thanks for the headsup. Hopefully we can buy new but I know even then it's getting it ready to be lived in and to our standards, etc. Then repairs throughout the years of owning the house. I've seen from others it's a lot to keep up!

Congratulations on your recent moved to another house. well, at least you get to renovate a little rather than buying an entire new house and re decorate everything, including the extensions.
of, course until you expect a lot of visitors, you don't really need to get it all done in a year since you have a home and getting things done sloly.

thanks, and we do love doing the work, it just seems slow at times and we want to do more only the budget doesnt allow that... so alot of the big stuff has been put off for a while... we hope to get more done during the summer though.
oh I have seen what people that build have to go through...no thanks!!! at least we are not ready for that yet!!

We bought a "fixerupper" about 3 years ago too. My hubby is very good at fixing things and has done a lot to this house. He has redone the fireplace with tiles and did the flooring in all bathrooms. The paint was done by us both, which did so much for this house.

I would love to put in a fireplace here but the house is really too small for that, and our next project is the bathroom... I so hope we can work on that this summer, that is the worst room in the house and really needs some work!!
that is great that you did that much work and it is always so great when it changes the feel to the house and you are happy with the results!!
happy mylotting and have a great day!

we rent our house but we have been here for so long that we do stuff like painting. we were lucky as the owner kept the house really nice. it was the house she grew up in so she is emotionally she is attached to it. I owned a house before this and I understand how you feel like the maintenance and repairs never ends. I will be back in that situation in about a year and I don't look forward to it.

there is so much that needs to be done ... and so little space that I have to put anything anywhere... I hope that through this summer I get a good amount of organizing and remodeling done.... at least that is what I am hoping for.
good luck when you get back into a house next year.
happy mylotting and have a great day!!

Hi Book.....nice to know we are not the only ones who did this...LOL
We did the same thing in buying a fixer upper. We wanted out in the country so we found and old farm house a couple years ago and believe me we must have been totally out of our minds when we bought it.
We have managed to fix the foundation which was in bad need of repair and have done
a wrap around porch that was already there just needed a few new boards and some fresh paint.
Believe me it will be a beautiful place when we get it done, but with doing all the work ourselves it is going to take along time.
Can't wait to have grandchildren and hang a tire swing in the big tree in the front yard for them to swing on.
