Cat Litterbox Dilemma

One of my cats is continually "going" on the carpet in the downstairs area of my bi-level townhouse. I was hoping placing a litterbox down stairs would help (I am thinking she doesn't feel well enough to make it up stairs every time). I was thinking about getting a Tidy Cat Breeze litterbox and wondered if anyone out there had used one and whether or not they liked it for their cats. I have an automatic litterbox up stairs (a littermaid) but can't afford another one right now and I have tried the scoop free and that didn't go over well either. Any advice on this matter would be most appreciated. Thanks.

This certainly can be a urinary problem, cats are prone to that. Best thing to do is check with the Vet, this can even develop into life threatening situation and even if not is often very painful. A simple change in diet will often take care of this. Once you know why you need to know how. The pet shop will carry a cleaning product that will eliminate the smell, so that even the cat can't smell it. This is the first step then provide a clean litter box and keep it very clean. Cats are creatures of habit and so you need to do all you can to break the habit. Good luck

It is usually strange coz what i know is cats are known for their cleanliness. It is better to consult a doctor about this.

They are pretty clean but they have their moments. Especially if something is wrong with them or they are stressed out.

I'd check for urinary problems or other health problems first. If that doesn't help you can switch the type of litter you use, sometimes that will help aswell. Cleaning out your litterbox with bleach can also help as the smell is very appealing for cats and they will want to "go" in this place. Last but not least I got a tip from a friend that white vinegar is thé way to keep a cat away from peeing or pooping in places that it shouldn't be doing that. Put a bowl of white vinegar in the spot and they will not go near it. After a while the spot is not appealing anymore. Make sure whilst doing this that your litterbox is nice and clean, and perhaps has the nice bleachy smell, so your cat learns that choosing the litterbox pays off for them personally. Hope that helps!

i'd never tried one-but they could be objecting to the multi use of a box. i would rinse it out with hot water and put a little bit of baking soda in the bottom under the litter. one of my cats was having a bigtime fit because her cousin was using the same box. they can still smell it even if we can't.a little soda stopped it.

The only cat litters I use for my two kitties is either Johnny Cat, though I prefer Fresh Step and my two cats use the same pan....I do clean it out at least once a week and they seem to be happy with the 'arrangement"---I HATE the scoop kind of litter. As far as the Tidy Cat Breeze type....most cats don't seemed to be too thrilled with it..it uses pellet type "litter"--also that "system" isn't cheap...why not for now, just get a regular litter pan and the fresh step type litter and place it downstairs...but also you'll have to make sure you clean the area well where she's peed on the carpet--forget Nature's Miracle...that doesn't get the odor out...NiLodor might be a better deal there

no problem. Thanks for the info. Ashley seems to like the pellets fine and Carlye is using the upstairs pan. The pellets don't get tracked out as much, a plus for this litterbox as it is in my living room, but it doesn't do much in the way of odor control but a plug in from bath and body works is taking care of that for me, they have a new clean scent that cancels out or cleans out odors, the system is working nicely for now.

How long has this been going on? Does it seem like he is straining when he is going? What kind of food is he eating? I just had to haul my second cat into the vet because a UTI, (urinary tract infection) They can kill a cat very quickly. As the vet explained, the cats who eat primarily dry food seem to get them more often than cats that get canned or moist food. Cats also don't drink a lot of water so they need the extra food to keep their kidneys and bladder healthy. Willy, my little boy, was so bad that there was blood in his urine. I had him on prescription antibioitcs and steroids for over a week to get the problem under control. He is again using the litter box, and will let me know when he isn't happy with the condition of the litter. I have a litter maid too, except with four cats it just doesn't do well in keeping up, and I am constantly refilling the thing, so I am going to sell it. You also might think about whether he likes the litter you're using. I had the problem with my female siamese, and finally I got smart and changed the litter I used and she hasn't ever mis-peed again. I would take the boy to the vet before it comes to the point of being an emergency. It's a LOT cheaper to pay for a simple office visit than to pay for an emergency visit.

Yeah, I have been thinking about taking her for a visit. I don't think its UTI she isn't straining and she isn't going out of the litter box all the time. I think its partially stress (our lives has dramatically changed in the last year) and maybe a territory issue. My cats have always disliked each other and now I think that upstairs is Carlye's territory and downstairs is Ashleys? Anyways I got the a new litterbox for downstairs and set it up this afternoon and Ashley (the one who has been messing on the carpet) jumped right it like it was all she had been waiting for. Carlye is prone to Urinary Crystals so I feed them canned food twice a day to help her get enough water so they are not primarily dry food eaters, but it is still something I keep a watch on. Thanks for the info, I usually take the girls in for a yearly visit and its sounds like a good time for me to do so.
