In defense of Catholicism.

While I appreciate the fact that there is freedom of speech, it bothers me to no end when fundamentalists and other non-Catholics start discussions that do nothing but castigate the Catholic Church. It's fine to debate, but to just come in here and trash the Church--that's extremely offensive. I love my Faith, I love my Church, I am loyal to Pope Benedict, and I know that a lot of other MyLotters do, too. I wish that instead of just throwing out memorized Bible verses without taking the time to put them into context (example: "For by grace you have been saved, through faith, and not of works, so that no man may boast." Well...have you read in the Epistle of James, verse 14 (Douay-Rheims Bible; it'll be a different verse in other Bibles, I'm sure) where it says "What shall it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but hath not works? Shall faith be able to save him?" Verse 15 goes on: "And if a brother or sister be naked 16.And one of you say to them "Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled", yet give them not those things that are necessary for the body, what shall it profit? 17. So faith also, if it have not works, is dead." Does anyone realize that Martin Luther wanted to delete James from the Bible because it didn't fit in with his Sola fide mantra? He called this epistle "an epistle of straw". Take a look at his own words sometime while you're online...Google it. It's going to be there.

There is no "right" or "wrong" religion. For me, they are just organizations. The bible for me is just a book of fiction written by men. As such, could be interpreted a million versions by other mind's of men. Wanna know true religion? For me, this is your personal relationship with God and how you treat other lifeforms inside His creation, up to the smallest living creature. Have you ever caused pain to others? Or have you always been a blessing to others. Religion is not important, it's your being that will matter, to all of mankind.

Thanks for the quote from the Epistle of James. I have a friend who is an evangelical free who throws the "grace not works" argument at me all the time and it's nice to see a defense. Apologetics is not my strong suit.

Hi coolcoder, Many Christians get angry when others are critical of their religion, but are quick to criticize others who don't believe exactly like them. Many of those people love to quote the Bible and accuse others of taking the words of the Bible out of context, when they are doing the same thing. Christians are told not to judge yet many do it all the time. I feel that all peoples are one and there are many paths to the mountaintop. Blessings.

Well said Cool.....there are enough subjects that can be bashed other than religion.Just because there are different ways of worshiping doesn't mean that they are right or wrong. They who think theirs is the only way that one is going to get into heaven, may just be the one sitting on the outside of the door. I say if you don't have anything good to say..keep your thoughts to yourself. flutterby
