Just curious. We live in a VERY small town with a very low cost of living (in comparison to other states I've heard of, at least), but the houses are very modest. I think that our house is pretty small, but then I'll watch something on TV involving house-hunting (especially in other countries) and the houses are SO EXPENSIVE but only, like, 700 square feet or something, and it just amazes me! Oh, and I went ahead and included the partially finished basement in my answer, since we use it.

My apartment is 1,000 sqft. My rent is $990/month. In the area I live in houses that are roughly the same size (if not smaller) and 50 years old run about $170K if they haven't been updated.

I live in Virginia Beach, VA in one of the nicer neighborhoods. Our house is 2100 square feet, not including the garage. Our house is appraised at 239,000, but we bought it for 189,000 and did some minor repairs it needed ourselves.

my house is only 65 sq ft and dont be amaze because its true. Land in my country is scarce and property are very expensive and most of the resident here lives on high rise blocks with about 150 to 200 families in a block. And depending on the location. an average house of 100 sq feet would cost about $200k to $250k.
