Are there any honest people left?

United States

I am beginning to think honesty isbecoming extinct in this day and age. It seems that many people don't mind cheating other people and stealing things if its easy to get away. Last night I forgot my flash drive in the library computer. I called the library 45 minutes after I left, and they could not find it, so obviously someone took it and kept it instead of turning it in to one of the librarians. Thank God I didn't have anything important on there. What would you have done if you had found it? And do you think there are still honest people left in the world today?

I think there are tons of honest people in the world! I would have turned the flash drive in. I think most people already have so many that there is no need to keep another! I think part of the reason why it seems like there arent any honest people left is because no one shares those stories! If you had called the library and they said 'yup someone turned it in 20 minutes ago!' would you have started a discussion on myLot? I think people should start sharing good stories more often! I think it will help everyone's outlook on life and remind us that looking out only for yourself isnt a good thing!

You have a good point there. No, I probably would not have bothered to start a discussion about it. I think I will try to find good things to write about, and hopefully that will be encouraging. I hope there are a lot of honest people left, like you say.

I have to agree with derlila here. I understand completely your frustration about losing the flash drive and the need to vent about it too, but I agree we need to find some positive things to discuss as well. So many people including myself focus mainly on the negative that we forget to express our gratitude for the positive. I think I'm going to make it a goal to find at least one positive thing for each day of the week to talk about, or if I post a negative, also post a positive kinda thing. At any rate keep checking back with the library who knows maybe whomever took it just wanted to see if there was anything good on it, and when they find out there's nothing important they might go ahead and turn it in? Good luck to you :)

You're right! Some people just don't share good stories. It's kind of like human nature to share a bad experience or something alike.

There are still some honest people in the world I guess its hard to find them at times. But I'm one of them. I would have given it to the librarian hoping that she does the right thing too. I agree though the morals of people have gone way down. I live knowing there is karma out there and it will come to bite you one day. I just find that doing the right thing is easier and makes you feel good. I guess there are people out there that think the complete opposite and shame on all of them. Karma will get them.

I hope that honesty is not extinct yet. It sounds like there are still some honest people here on mylot, anyway. Morals have gone down for sure, but I hope there's still some left.

I think there are. I think I (for the most part) am one. Of course, not always. I don't think anyone always is. But I know what you mean. Lately, I've had some bad experiences with people including the creep who stole my cell phone out of my backpack in Washington, D.C. The trick is not to let these few bad people get you down and remember that people are basically good on the whole.

Yes, I guess I do let them get me down. But it just seems that around here a lot of people are only out for themselves, no matter what they do to other people.

There are a lot of honest people but sometimes we need the dishonest to teach us to be more aware of what we do and to protect what we have. I believe that it was just a lesson for you to remember next time to double check. I am not picking on you, I also forget things sometimes. I have been fortunate enough to find some of the things I left behind or forgot, but I have lost some things as well. I have used those losses as a reminder to make sure that I have everything before I leave a place. I am happy for you that there was nothing important on the flash drive, or even better yet, that you did not forget your wallet. that could have had worse effects. Blessings

Yes, I guess it taught me a lesson. I've been very forgetful recently, I think the stress of school is making me senile at a young age! I hope I can get through and graduate while I still have some mind left LOL!

I am an honest person, I would have given it to the librarian. It's not mine, and you could buy one no a days for $10. Karma sucks, I don't need bad karma. I also believe what goes around comes around. I sorry you got your flash drive stolen from you.

Thank you for being honest. I know the flash drives aren't very expensive, but it was inconvenient for me and right now my finances are very tight. At least I have a credit in Amazon.com, so I will try to get one there.

Its not the fact of being cheap for you to replace it, its the fact of being cheap enough that one doesn't have to steel it. They should have just given it to the librarian instead of keeping it, if they wanted one they should go buy one for $10. Like I said, its all about karma. When I was younger, I started a little lie, and boy did i learn my lesson. What was a little white lie, came true. So call me chicken... I'll keep it honest and deal with the nicer punishment then lying and having to deal with all the bad stuff that comes with it.

Well, it seems that there are quite a few honest people on Mylot, anyway. So at least honesty is not completely extinct. It is getting more uncommon though.

I have been wondering about this too myself. In fact, I have always thought that honesty is the best policy. However, yet many people like to be dishonest to get through things easily and faster. It's not hard being perfect but I think it's not hard to be honest. That was quite a bad situation there that you have, and to think that someone could use your card for his/her own personal usage. Man..what is the world coming to, I wonder.

Thing is.. I don't know how people keep their lies straight!! I mean, you tell a lie and you have to remember what you told who so if it is brought up again... you know what you said.. or didn't say! And if you tell one person that...and another person something else... you have to keep those 2 "responses" straight and what if those 2 people talk and compare your "responses" to each other? But if you tell the truth and are honest... you might not get the prize, but at least you don't stress yourself out with keeping what lies you told to who straight!

It's something like what they said: One lie leads to another and another. I so agree on that.

I am an honest person. I believe that my fiance is also an honest person. And I'm sure that there are other honest people out there. I don't think that honesty is becoming extinct at all. It's true that there are liars out there, but not everyone is dishonest.

hi Connierebel, i have read your discussion " Are there any honest people left?" yes there are honest people in this world still, but the honesty is 25 percent only not 100 percent, if it is written in your fate to loose some thing, surely you will loose that thing, each and every thing will be written according to results of our previous births. it is correct and check yourself, we will do so many mistakes and do so many things unwantedly, i am unable to express my view to lack of good English, sorry for the interruption, thank you

This is the reason why people really loves me. And I received lots of gifts in return as a blessing. I gave wallets with lots of money to the owners who left it and they said Thank You, some they are shock and fell unbelievable speech less but I'm happy to do it. I gave back a woman's wallet that she left. And gave me a beautiful bright smiling face and we became friends a so beautiful woman. In college I'm so sick and absent, next day exam I got the lowest score of 4 but I fell good even some of my classmates laughed on me. Some they miss check my exam I told the teacher, this is not my real score. The teacher is so happy and some they call me the angel of the school. One exam all elite students and their friends have the same pattern of assignment and exam the teacher is angry and ask one student. And she didn't know the answer cos she just copied. My unique and peculiar. Teachers and students likes me for my honesty. My employer and roommates loves me. "When I do good I feel good". -Lincoln. Honesty is the only best policy.

there are so many honest people left in the word, have you ever been in the philippines, filipino is one of the most honest people in the world (except for our politician). it is one of the great trait of a pinoy, eventhough they are poor and some dont have a very high education pilipino has a highest respect for their dignity and they will not do anything for this. have you ever heard of an honest taxi driver who return the bag of his passenger that containing a very large amount of money.

To be honest is never easy, frankly. It's because this might hurt others or yourself personally. Me,personally is not an honest person..well i can tell the veracity but i can never cal myself an honest person cause undeniably i tell lies to my parents and even in myself but there's nothing to tel lies sometimes...maybe it just depends on the situation. And to be honest is to be true so perhaps what you said is true that it has become an extinction nowadays...

Sometimes white lies are essentials to save yourself and others. But it is sin. Anything is false witness is sin in Exodus chapter 20. Super honest you lost some friends but some honest and righteous people are still in your side. That's the beauty of it.

Well, ill try to answer your question with another question: -Are you an Honest people?... if your answer is yes then youre certanly theres is at least one honest people :D. But you are right, there is no much honest and kind people left. If you see around, almost everybody is just caring for themselves we have become selfish and the wish of money and wealth are making the people to lost the good ways and to make things that we never think we will do. So here is my point to have a little reflexion about: Do not ask if there are still honest people, or good people or anything, we should be asking ourselves if we are the ones doing the right thing, if we are the ones that are caring about others, and if we have things clear and knows that money and matterial things are just that: THINGS. And the more important thing of all: Are we teaching the near and loved ones this?

Yes, I am honest. I always return things I find in the library to the librarian, and in other places to whoever would be most qualified to return it to whoever it belongs to. Your reflections are great. Yes, we should all look to ourselves first before we criticize other people. If each of us does the right things, maybe we will get more to follow us. Thanks.

Yes there is, me! Well, I cannot say that I am 100% honest because there are really times when we have to telly lies to avoid people close to us being hurt but in totality, I am 95% honest. My belief is that if we want honesty then we must be honest to other people as well and telling the truth will save us from troubles in the future. I know, that most people nowadays care only for themselves but we should not be like them. Instead, we must act as a role model to them. In our own little way, we can make change to our society.

Two times I lost my wallet ( it even had some cash in it ) both time it was return nothing was taken and the people didn't accept any kind of reward. When I had a flat I was in front of a tire place no money and a guy from the store changed my tire before I could even try to offer anything ( he didn't know I was broke ) he told me it was on the house ( he was on his break ! ) Another time a tire place gave me my money back because they could fix my tire. Their are still good people out there, sometime they are just hard to find.

I think there are still honest people. It is just the number of dishonest people outnumber the others. The world has changed and there are just much much more temptations than before. Sometimes, people are not that dishonest or greedy into taking taking things that don't belong to them. The truth is that the line between right and wrong gets blurred now that there are times where they don't actually know that it is wrong that they have done something.
