Anemia

I am beginning to think that I am anemic. I am tired all of the time. I know I could easily take an iron pill to help with it, but I am terrible about remembering to take pills. What other ways can I increase the iron in my diet? Any foods that are really high in iron?

hi lilybug! well, i have had two children. i had c-sections with each, and after the first i was told that i was anemic so i would have to take iron pills for a little bit. i have not been tested under normal circumstances, but i am pretty sure that i am anemic all the time and not just while pregnant (if that makes sense!) lol after having my second c-section, the doctor told me that i had lost alot of blood due to my anemia and they wanted to give me a blood transfusion (which my husband and i decided was too risky). i ended up just staying in the hospital an extra day so they could monitor me. i do feel tired alot more than i think is normal, but there are other things that i contribute that to as well. anyway, i know what you are going through. eat lots of red meat; well, as much as you can! :) that is high in iron- stuff like steak, hamburgers, etc. this is what my doctor told me to do after i left the hospital. also fish. these are foods from which the body will absorb the iron easiest. enriched and whole grain breads and cereals, dry beans and peas, and dark green leafy veggies also contain iron. just be careful when taking iron pills. they often make your stool harder and it is more tough to go to the bathroom, so be sure to take a stool softener as well. good luck!

Thanks for the lengthy response. I have my periods 2 times a month, so when I am having them I am more tired than I am the rest of the month too. I read somewhere that the extra blood loss with the second period could cause me to be anemic.

Lily- is the 2 periods a month natural for you? Have you looked into hormonal birth control that can lower that? Most hormonal birth controls help to regulate your cycle, and some even stop your cycle all together. I wouldn't recommend the Depo shot, but I've heard the Mirena IUD can be helpful (I have the non-hormonal IUD). You should talk to your doctor about it. I was put on birth control when I was only 13 (long before i was sexually active) just to help regulate my cycle, and also to combat some cysts growing on my ovaries.

meat, poultry, fish, dark green leafy vegetables, liver dry peas and beans. always try to eat them with a high vitamin c food as well. the vitamin c helps absorb the iron in your body. if you do decide to take the iron pills, take it with a cup of orange juice, again, the vitamin c will absorb the iron. im 38, and found out i was anemic about 20 years ago. i cant take pills either, so i just eat lots of the foods i listed and ive been fine.

When I was 15 I was told I was anemic, and I too am not good at taking pills. Green vegetables are usually high in iron. I like to eat a lot of spinach around that time of month to help with my iron levels. I think broccoli is another veggie high in iron.

I am borderline anemic. That means once I test anemic..the next I'm ok. This is very common among women to be anemic. Anything dark green is great but the best is liver. I can't stand liver..but it is great for anemia. Extremly high in iron. Iron pills are good but you have to make sure your body absorbs them. I would suggest adding alot of orange juice in your diet with green leafy foods and liver a couple of times a month at least. No pills. I hate pills even worse than liver..lol..Take care.

I think u can try to eat food that are iron substances, such as vitamin B such as liver, meat, yolk, milk, nuts and green vegetables. And try to consumse Vitamin C such as orange, tomato, manggo, etc. When u consumption a lot of substances containing iron supplements or iron pill, try to avoid drink tea and coffee because tea and coffee prevent absorption of iron substance. That is i knew when i read in magazine, hope can helping u^^
