Do I need a positive rating to my comment to earn ?

I went through the guidelines of myLot but did not find any mention about the positive and negative ratings. Do you think we get paid only when someone ( mostly the one who has started the discussion and you are commenting on it) will rate your comment as positive ? Or will mark your response as the best one ? If this is not what pays us then what are those ratings used for ?
