Do you support No-Kill Cat Shelters?

My sister found a kitten wandering around lost downtown so she brought him to her house to keep him safe. Unable to keep a cat, she wasn't sure where to bring him (veterinarian office, humane society, pet store). She didn't want to bring him to the humane society as they euthanize animals if they don't get adopted by a certain time. I talked to a few friends and one of them suggested a place called Rescue North as it is a No-Kill shelter. This means that none of the animals surrendered to the shelter are killed to make room for new ones. Each animal that comes in stays until it finds a home. You can visit their site for more information. www.rescuenorth.com My sister and I brought the little kitten there and gave them a $20 donation for respecting animals' right to live. Do you support No-Kill shelters that give all animals a second chance at life?

I "are" a no kill shelter, maybe not offically - yet - but I have 26 cats and the only cat we took to be put down had a very infectious desease that we didn't want to chance the other cats getting and no way to seperate her from the rest.

That's so kind-hearted of you to take in that many little ones. How do you ever manage them all?!? I can't imagine the level of noise at feeding time, I have four and they meow loud enough to raise the roof lol.

thanks, but I free feed so only when I let the food bowls get empty do they fuss, and are more likely to get upset about an empty water dish than food

I'm a foster for a no-kill organization, so I totally support them. Unfortunately, being no-kill means that if they get too full and don't have enough space, they have to turn cats away and those cats probably will end up at the humane society. I think this is why we all need to spay and neuter our pets, and encourage other people to do the same. So many of the cats that this organization takes care of are from unwanted litters of kittens.

I agree, spay/neutering is the only way we are going to get the unwanted pet population under control. I recommend it to anyone I know that gets a pet. I've also sponsored animals to get spay/neutered for low-income families. I hope that some day, we can truly say we live in a no-kill pet nation.

I don't donate to them, but I actually used to volunteer with one in my area called "Feline Rescue Inc.", and it was (and still is, of course), a no-kill kitty shelter. I really do respect these places. It's so incredibly sad when you see pounds & even humane societies (which are supposed to live up to their namesakes - as "humane") literally have EXPIRATION dates for cats who aren't adopted by a certain date. To me, this is beyond depressing. It's nice that your sister decided to give the cat to this shelter in particular and not a pound or humane society. At least you know that the cat will be in good hands!

I couldn't have coined the phrase better. No living animal should have an expiration date :( It makes me sooooo sad to read the statistics of how many healthy animals are euthanized because no one comes to claim them within a certain time. Some shelters have time frames as short as 5 working days for adult animals, which is enough to make me CRY (I'd prefer to scream but no one likes a scene and it won't get any result other than me taken away by the men in white coats). Rescue North services a very large area (800 km radius) and is located 2 hours away from where I live, or I would volunteer with them as much as I could. I don't even have direct access to a veterinarian in my town, let alone our own shelter. The best we have is a modified garage building with cages installed that the by-law officers have to store animals picked up by the pound. I'm afraid to ask what they do with them if no one comes to pick them up ;(
