When I grow up I’m going to drink out of a glass...I can’t wait!

I read in the paper the other day that a popular drinking establishment here in our city has decided to stop serving drinks in glass but will be using plastic cups from now on to avoid the rising number of glass related injuries due to violent drink induced fights. I am amazed that we, as a society have to have glasses taken away from us because we cannot be civil enough to go out for a drink without throwing a glass in someone’s face! What has amazed or floored you lately?

We can't be civil enough to go out for a drink without throwing a glass in someone's face! Very good point. I can relate it with a class room incident. It is like a teacher giving a permission to cheat to its students because they can't teach them how to get good marks in exams. I don't think this would work. Hve your fingers crossed though.

Good analogy sanuanu! It is not fair that we should all be treated like children because of those few idiots out there who cause trouble every weekend! Thanks for responding!

The masses have to get used to changes because of a minority on every field it appears. Lack of respect is causing so many things to change. I can remember some of the first things I noticed when I first moved here to Italy from UK. Thirty years ago things were so different and it was more usual to see the difference between the different countries. Now due to globalisation so many cultures are changing. Here thirty years ago I was amazed to see that in banks, at the butchers and anywhere where you had to wait your turn it was a case of who did the 'elbowing' better got to be in front of the line. Then over the years the numbering machines came in and now everyone gets served in the right order. When I go back to UK it amazes me to see people lining up to use the ATM machines with no number, even Italians A case of when in Rome (or London) do as the Romans do - but they don't! Seems that sadly the masses of respectful, honest people are getting caught into rules and regulations just becuase others have no respect anymore and that is oh so sad

THAT is Italy! It is improving up here in the north but down south it is more or less the same. I have enjoyed watching the changes that have taken place on both side of the Channel over all these years. My favourite places are airports. When using the escalators and it says 'keep to the right' heheee.... it's fun to see which nationalities actually heed that notice Then we have parking spaces outlined in blue for those who have some sort of disability. There have a special permit on their car which allows them to use those slots - if THEY are driving. Some seem to think the permit pertains to the car! Ugh! We even have parking spaces outside banks and post offices (to name a few) outlined in pink. These are reserved for pregnant ladies who may have difficulty finding a space near to these places. Now, I ask myself, do we have to be told to let them have priority nowadays? Something has (is) gone wrong somewhere...

Hi diana. I remember being in Italy many years ago and waiting for my turn at the bakery. The shop assistant asked who was next because there was no line to speak of. No one said anything so I piped up and tentatively said, "Io" as I had been waiting a while. Well upon my words all hell broke lose! I was sworn at and abused for pushing in the line! It was so disorderly and nothing like in Australia where, as far back as I can remember people always neatly lined up, in Italy it was every man for himself, scary really! I'm glad all that has changed and funnily enough although we still line up here, we are not as orderly as we used to be! Respect for one another is dwindling and I agree it is so very sad.

It is always amazing when people start drinking how Superior they think they are. They tend to talk about anything making themselves look bigger and better than someone else, and even tend to start fights sometimes about things that are not even true. Places that turn to this method are only trying to save $$, and it is sad that they have to turn to this resort for sure. If more people would learn to be sensible drinkers if they drink, this would be better for everyone involved.

This is ridiculous! Firstly they are ready to increase the price and add to environment pollution by adding plastic to their daily agenda! And all because they cannot behave civilised! Do they have any idea?

Wow I hadn't heard of that. I wouldn't go to that bar if I was going to be served in plastic cups. Half of the fun of drinking a martini is to have it in a martini glass...etc. Plus you are spending so much money on drinks they should be served in glasses. It's a shame that people do not know how to control how much they drink and will ruin it for the people who are responsible. This is one of the reasons why I don't like to go to bars because people are irresponsible, I'd rather drink at home or with friends at someone's house.

I feel the same way; it has gotten worse in the last few years because when I was younger I'm sure going out was a lot safer, these days I stay home most of the time too. Thanks dreamr!

It is not surprising. A related issue: we have to be told not to drink and drive. Not only do we have to be told this, but the cops have to run checkpoints (especially during three day weekends like this one) to make sure that people are listening to the message. Oh wait, yeah checkpoints, that implies that as a society, enourgh of us are not listening to the message of don't drink and drive.

Paula- Wow. Of course, the one club I've been to once downtown here serves everything in disposable plastic cups as well. It's just sad that we live in such a society, you know. You'd think that being a species who apparently is highly rationale and with superior mind would avoid such things. I don't drink often though, and when out I only have one glass so I'm always amazed by those who drink to the point of being stupid. Namaste-Anora

I'm the same because I don't drink much either; I used to when I was younger but never to the point that I felt like throwing a glass at someone! I guess we are treated like little children because so many behave that way. Thanks for stopping by Anora!

I see how that can be unbelievable, but it seems that in our society civilization is not so civilized after all. And I have seen people of various ages playing with glass bottles and breaking them so that other people are hurt!! I think it is plain sick and silly!

Many people have complained that the drinks won't taste the same in plastic and I am inclined to agree although the pub's owner has reassured that this particular plastic will not affect the drink. Sounds odd to me... Thanks for the response Leonma!
