help... my dog has contracted scabies and looks real miserable these days with its fur falling off and itching problems. it has lost its peppy nature and sleeps most of the time. i did contact the vet, but he his advice of applying a lotion all over its body isn't just working out. he prescribed Wysolone tabs too, but even after giving it for more than a month, the situation is only worsening. does anyone out there know of any reliable cure for scabies in dogs?

I don't know if this will work for scabies, but they are similar to lice infestations. This recipe is not sanctioned by any vet...but will tell you what we used 1 4oz bottle Sulfodene First Aid Skin Medication for dogs...takes care of itching especially. 1/2 box baking soda (again for the itching) 1 child's medicine dropper full to the brim with Tea Tree Oil (this part is essential!) 1 cup olive oil (It is good for the coat and will make it so eggs cannot stick to the fur) 1/4 cup Honey 1/2 bottle of Suave clarifying shampoo (the regular size not the super size or anything). 1/2 bottle Suave Humectitant conditioner (with coconut oil). Directions In a large bowl or bucket, combine all but the first ingredient (Sulfodene). Stir it till all the dry ingredients involved are at least moist. Bath your dog using that mixture. Slather it all over and leave on for at least a minute and a half at a time depending on size and dog's tolerance level. You might start with half the dog one day..and half the dog another day to see how he reacts to it. Use your finger tips to work it in all thru the hair..down the tail, belly, between back legs and front, arm pits etc. We did two different applications. The Sulfodene is for topical use only and you aren't supposed to rinse that off. It will sting, but it works..simply dry your dog off the best you can and pour the Sulfodene onto a cloth. Press to the worst areas. Have someone hold him down as he will probably get pretty upset about it at first..but the shampooing will help that too. Use enough to apply to the worst areas at first (places he can reach. He won't like the smell or the taste so chances are he won't lick it off. If he does, it shouldn't bother him other than to taste really funny and make his tongue hang out. (Ours didn't have a problem). Wait a few days before reapplying the mix..as you want to see if its doing any good. Diet: Protein is essential for this. Go as much to protein as you can instead of kibble. Depending on the type of dog and what the dog can tolerate in his diet...you can feed them meat (cook it..we don't want to add to the parasites he's already got!) Boil it in water preferably...add a cup of rice for every two cups of water. Feed him the meat and rice mixture instead of kibble for at least a week. Add half kibble half meat/rice mixture the second week. He will gain weight that way. If he is a large breed dog, (over 50lbs) the meat may not be enough protein. You can add kidney beans, pinto beans, navy beans (cooked) to this mix for more protein. Also add dried peas for some green veggies. Things not to feed your dog: Vitamin C: Dogs produce this naturally and do not need suppliments for it. No citrus. If you give fruit give a half a banana or half an apple for added fiber if the dog has runny stools or anything. Also give a couple of tablespoons of yogurt a day. This will help just like it does for humans to change the "ph" balance of the stomach and intestines. Also, add the occasional tablespoon or two of olive oil to the mix. Makes for a shiny healthy coat. My guess is your dog has more than Scabies. I suggest the above, as it worked on our dog. (We have two large/giant breed dogs..ages 9yrs and 2yrs respectively. ) They are a husky/great pyrennes/Golden Retriever mix and Akita Inu/Rhodesian Ridgeback/Karnelian Bear Dog mix. Our dogs are working dogs, so they get a heavy protein diet, but also way more than regular "pets" eat. They get calories that sled dogs get..so adjust according to your dog's weight, size and normal activity level. I would also ask that he be tested for mange if you can afford to take him to a vet. I might even get a second opinion if I was you. Scabies are visible to the naked eye. If you can see them, then you should be removing them with a tweezers and just like ticks the best way to do away with them is to burn them. Really...they are blood suckers just like ticks. I suggest you get your dog new bedding, completely sterilize his area. If he has scabies, its contagious to you, your kids etc. Make sure you get rid of them all. If its not scabies, and you have no symptoms etc you need to take care of it as mange. The tablets for scabies will not work if its mange. I hope this has helped a little. As I said above..this advice is from someone who did this on their own. I didn't ask a vet and it worked...I've got lots of experience with homeopathic remedies, so I felt confident in doing it. However, a vet will be able to give a more concrete diagnosis. Do not substitute ingredients, as the ones listed above do work, and are not that expensive..and some you will already have in your home perhaps. I cannot vouch for the safety of these remedies with your dog, as I can for the safety of my dogs and these remedies. You have to be a lot more specific on breed, size and age of dog before I can really give more advice. I can give links to sites about specific breeds and ailments even but not without more info. (Too many to list here right now in the time I have...will come back to this if you reply with more info :) Good Luck..and do get a second opinion..sounds like you have a vet that may not take much stock in "examination" and only talked to you about the symptoms. He should have done a blood test and a skin scrape test.

wow.. thanks pal. that's a great lot of advice. i am not sure about what all ingredients you have listed are available here. i will have to check it out. but reading your post, i have my doubts about scabies because i cannot find any tick or lice like insects on it. the skin is flaking and the fur is dropping off. in areas where the fur has dropped out, initially it was pink and now it is turning grey. immediatly after a bath, the dog feels very itchy and as a result, it is getting wounded too. anyway, i have called in the vet again. let me see what he suggests. i really hope my dog gets better soon. thanks for the response. happy mylotting.

I'm glad I could help...Just remember that if you cannot see them, not scabies..might be fleas or lice..but not scabies. The second poster is right as well. Thanks for the best answer vote :)

Hey one last thing ..the Sulfadine may help at least with the itch all on its own. You can find it at Petco, or other pet supply stores..and probably at the vet too. Also, you can give dogs Benedryl safely. It's an antihistamine and it will help with the itch. It will make your dog sleepy. Stick it in some peanut butter or cheese to get him to take it. (This is a people medicine..but on consulting a vet they say it's safe). Ours got a full dose, but he's 140lbs. Yours probably needs a half or less. Ask your vet if its safe for your dog though, as big dogs are very different than little dogs.

I just realized you are in India..that changes your ingredients list a little I suppose..and some of what I said may be lost in translation. My husband suggested that since you are in India you might find Lentils and rice easier to find. Dried beans might not be easy to find where you are from, I am not sure. He suggested you might feed him couscous or hummus minus the spices. Tea Tree Oil should be fairly easy to find where you come from...go to a "pharmacist" that specializes in medicinal spices and oils. They may be able to suggest something that will be helpful that I have not thought of. Tell them what you told us about your dog. I am sure there may be someone around that specializes in natural remedies for animals that you might find what you need with. Sulfadine is a topical anti-itch medicine. You can use whatever you have there that might be the same thing. Anything that treats "dermatitis" or "skin rashes" on dogs. Pet supply stores have these things, so you might find a pet supplies store, or ask your vet about something to help the itch. For Bathing: Shampoos and conditioners are interchangeable..just find something with as few ingredients in it as possible....and mix the ingredients with that...stuff formulated for babies is a good idea (but with no funny flavors or scents and as few coloring agents as possible). Antihistamines are medicines that help humans with things like hay fever. If its some sort of allergy it would even possibly clear his problem on its own. However, human medicines differ from dog medicines so do be careful about this. I don't know what you might have available there. I hope this explains it a little better for you. Sorry, I should have had a look at your profile before I replied and probably would have avoided some of the confusion at least. Hope this helps a little more :) Your English is spectacular but our English is just plain strange and often we have too many words to describe simple things. Sorry if I ramble...I've been riding 15 miles a day on a bike for my work taking care of pets so a little more tired than usual.

thanks a million for all this advice and tips. i was a little apprehensive about some of the items you had mentioned. but it makes more sense now. I guess, when in forums like mylot, we tend to automatically cross all borders of nationality, religion, etc and often behave like one united whole. Infact, i guess that's why we take an interest in the problems of others and try to help them out to the best of our ability. That's just what you have done! i appreciate the fact that inspite of having such a hectic day, you have taken the pains to discuss the problem of my dog with your husband and come up with some remedies that may cure it. thank you and have a great day, friend.

My dog had that to when he is still a live. Frequently taking bath and removing leach is what i done to him. Vet advice would be costly to me in our country but i think proper hygiene is the number priority to take care of your dog. Dont feed your dog a chocolate, a friend of mine told me its bad from then.
