Teething, is it that painful and needs hospitalization?

I just received a call from my cousin, she informed me that her daughter was admitted to the hospital because she is growing a tooth, and is in too much pain, she won't eat or drink anything. That got me really worried, because her daughter is just a week older than my son. I am afraid my child might go through the same pains...and worst, get hospitalized, just because of a growing tooth.
Does teething really cause that much pain to a baby? What are other options aside from hospitalization? Are there available remedies for this?

Seriously??? I have three children, whom all went through teething together and well we never even went to the doctor for it.
Maybe she was put in the hospital because she is dehydrated but it is not because of the teething.
There are things you can do at home to help with the pain and make it better for them so they will eat and not get dehydrated.
