'Bid' is when you put a price on something. Before the person offer you the work, he/she will consider your bid. You place a price that you think deserve for the work. The lower bid you give, the more chance you get to win the task.
Its hard to win bid in the freelancer for a beginner. Unless you can convince them you are reliable and able to do the work in high quality before deadlines. Good luck to.

Most sites like it mean you simply "bid" on a project you're interested in. Let's say someone was looking to get a logo made, this is the kind of place they go to find outsourcing work(generally you can find people willing to do things cheaper on the internet then going through normal means.)
You basically bid on what you're willing to pay for a given project, to put it simply. If your bid is a reasonable price to the person looking for someone to do whatever the kind of work that's the price they will pay you when the work is completed whatever type of work that may be.
