I know that they have to do what they have to do, they can not race in the rain and there comes a time that they have to call a race due to weather but I think that the race today was truly stolen by David, did he have a good strategy and make a good gamble, yes and that is part of racing. But nothing will ever make me like these races that are called for rain.
No fan, or as far as that goes, driver, wants to see a rice end this way. Boring end to the great American race.

Nothing against David but that's not how a race should be won. NASCAR needs to make an adjustment when it comes to rain. The easiest thing that they could do is just red flag the race immediately if it's stopped because of rain. Don't allow the cars to pit just red flag it immediately. If the race is called then the guy who is first on the track at the time is the winner and then I think everyone can accept that. And if the rain stops and NASCAR can get the track dry and get the race restarted then they can let the guys pit if they want to.
But the way they have it now where you get to pit before the race is red flagged is a serious disadvantage to leader of the race at the time. If he pits then some guys are going to stay out and if the race gets called then that guy is screwed. But if he stays out then everyone else pits and if the race gets restarted then he gets screwed that way too. So situations like today only end up screwing the guy who happened to be the best on the race track and reward the guy who gambled and got lucky. That's not how races should be decided. Drivers and teams shouldn't have to play that kind of guessing game in order to win a race.
If you go back to Indy last year, this is three straight "crown jewel" events that have ended up being disasters. And Indy this year looks like it will be a disaster too. If I was a viewer watching NASCAR for the first time today then I would be really turned off by the sport. I mean if this is the way that they decide races then I don't want to watch. Seeing a guy who was the dominant driver today get cheated because of rain and some guy with dumb luck win it would leave me scratching my head wondering how something like that could happen. That's not the impression that NASCAR should leave on viewers who might have an interest in becoming fans.
Again this could be fixed very easily if NASCAR would just keep the pits closed and red flag the race immediately and keep the pits closed until they were absolutely sure that they were going to restart the race. But that makes too much sense and NASCAR really isn't known for their common sense.
