how do i make a smaller slideshow video in kdenlive or open movie editor?

I keep trying to make a movie in kdenlive and open movie editor and my file size is over 400mb just for about four photos and the photos are about 280kb a piece, what am i doing wrong and how do i correct it? I am on ubuntu jaunty jackaloupe :)
