Judge Sonia Sotomayor probably as good as we can hope for from Prs. Obama

Prs. Obama has nominated Federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor to fill Justice Souter's seat on the US Supreme Court.
I think it's a good nomination.. not great, but good. Her qualifications are impeccable, having served with distinction in the courts she's presided over. I strongly disagree with her on many issues, but I don't expect any judge to check with me before they make a ruling. I also think it's naive of anyone to think that Prs. Obama is going to even consider a strict contructionist nomineee.
The problem isn't Sotomayor as much as it is Obama's reasoning for naming her. They have nothing to do with her qualifications and everything to do with the color of her skin, her heritage, her childhood and all those other things liberals say shouldn't be important.
I know a lot of conservatives will protest this nomination, and that is their right. The fact that she is strongly pro abortion on demand will make her unacceptable for most. However, considering who is president and who runs Congress, a fetus has a better chance of surviving a trip to a Planned Parenthood clinic than we have of getting an anti abortion on demand nominee anytime soon.
There are Republicans in Congress who will move to prevent this nomination, but I say, "hold your breath". Prs. Obama could have done a lot worse here... he could have found a Ruth "Buzzy" Ginsberg clone.
At least Judge Sotomeyer is competent.. and literate. If a constructionist justice was retiring, I'd probably feel differently about this nomination. However, looking at Justice Souter's record on the bench, I'd say she's a decent replacement for him.

I guess your assessment of Obama's choice is as good as we can hope for from a conservative, Ted...lol! No, seriously, I appreciate that. I couldn't argue that Roberts or Alito weren't qualified either although I also disagree with them on many issues. I realize that the only way there wouldn't have been allegations that the choice was made based on gender or race would have been if it were a white male. I'm sure her gender and her heritage DID help her but, as you said, her qualifications are impeccable and I have no problem with our Supreme Court being more representative of the nation. As far as Sotomeyer being a good replacement for Souter, I've heard some say she's really quite moderate and won't be that easy to predict.

I haven't been able to find anywhere where Obama said he was only looking for an Hispanic woman. I know there was talk that some groups were urging him to do so andhe certainly never ruled it out but that's a far cry from him stating that gender and race were his main considerations. We all know that had he chosen another white male there would have been a huge outcry over that from the right as well as the left. The right would have used it against him and would have said he'd "overlooked his base" or something like that.

Not Hispanic specifically, but he only considered women.
I will take the "White" part back though, he did have a White woman on his list of possible nominees.
