Does anyone know the average life span of a Shih Tzu?

I don't want my Maxi(shih tzu) to die. I love my pet more than anything else. I thought their life was 20 years.

I don't want to think about our poor Katie passing away either as she is my oldest daughter's pet. We got her for her for her 2nd birthday! Katie (our shih-tzu) turns 4 this year and so does her owner (our daughter). Katie was 2 when we got her!

You still have a long time with your Maxi as long as he is taken care of and from what you said I'm sure he his. I hope you enjoy a longlife with Maxi. Thanks for responding!

Hi lelin ... as far as I know the life span of a Shih Tzu is 10-16 years. That is what Wikipedia has told me anyways! I was curious as well because I too have a shih-tzu. Katie is just about 4 years old so we will hopefully get many more years out of her!

Yes, you very well could get quite a few more years out of Cody, and I hope that you do! My family and I do really enjoy Katie, especially my girls because Katie is so good with them!

Most small breeds such as yours, have a life expectancy of anywhere from 12-18 years. I have a small dog as well but he is only 4 and I don't want to think about it :(

I know what you mean! My cody just turned 11 this past weekend. So that's why the queston came to me. He is now 77 in dog years. That is pretty old. I got to say though when he sees a rabbit in the yard for 77 he can still run thru the yard fast.

13.4 years is the average, smaller dogs live longer lives. No one seems to know why. Of course your dog may live several years longer with good living conditions, like food and exercise.

Well my Cody has a good home with good food and a big backyard to run around in. I take him for walks from time to time but he gets out of breath climbing the hills around here. So I limit the walks. He chases the rabbits and the birds in the yard. He has alot of smunk still for an older dog. I hope I have at least another 5 years with him. Thanks for responding!
