Simpsons or Family Guy which is better? Why?

I just don't get it. I've had so many people pop up in my life that just absolutely adore Family Guy. I really can't stand it. The whole show just seems like a low brow version of The Simpsons to me. I have even had people tell me that they can't stand The Simpsons , but that they love Family Guy. I even notice regularly that many of the episodes of Family Guy are total remakes of older Simpsons episodes. Am I really the only one that can see this? I just can't let myself believe that Family Guy is better than The Simpsons.

I have encountered this before too. these two are always compared. I enjoy Family Guy too, it contains the same approach to humor as the Simpsons does, which is probably why the former is accused of copying The Simpsons. But each to his own. Both are equally funny and I actually have no intentions of comparing them since both can give me a good laugh anytime of day.

of course. i guess that's the reason why some of us do not get to enjoy life fully bcuz human has this natural impulse to compare. you just have to enjoy them individually instead of trying to figure out which is funnier of the two. then, life would be a whole lot better.

Like south park said "the simpsons did everything", so a lot of episodes have to be remakes. But I still prefer simpsons over family guy, because it always has interesting plots that I usually find entertaining. Family guy is still funny, but all they usually do is throw random jokes that almost have nothing to do with what is going on at that point at you. I think that even after family guy gets cancelled AGAIN, simpsons will still be airing.

A double post for a double dose of your correctness. Simpsons will outlive all television and mankind. In the future the characters will emerge from a new type of TV that makes shows become real. Then The Simpsons will take over and all will be good in the universe. well........................ at least they'll outlast Family Guy lol

I definitely like the simpsons better. Family guy has its funny moments but it will never match the comedy genius of the simpsons. One thing I've noticed about family guy is they throw a lot of stuff into the story line that just doesn't make any sense and it isn't funny either. I think simpsons is written better. There is a reason why simpsons is still going and family guy was cancelled.

I totally agree, but I didn't know that Family Guy had been canceled again. That is crazy, I really thought FOX would milk that one forever.

I agree with you bunnyhoover, Family Guy is just a spin off of The Simpsons. Just like you said Family Guy runs some of the same episodes that The Simpsons had done earlier. But with all of that being said, i also like Family Guy. That show is more adult orientated. Just like you i don't get it either, how can you hate The Simpsons and love Family Guy? Basically the same show.

I am totally there with ya rodstar! I don't know though that I would say Family Guy is more adult. I don't necessarily think that it's more adult to use extreme vulgarity or over the top offensive humor. I mean, heck some of the stuff is pretty darned funny. But, frack! Ren and Stimpy was pretty darned funny to. It is kinda crazy though how someone could like Family Guy but hate Simpsons. I can understand it being the other way around, Liking Simpsons, but hating Family Guy. Simpsons is just more for the intellectual side of society. It's really similar writing , one just seems more dumbed down than the other. Use shock value instead of intellectually challenging situations. I've really been liking some of the more recent Family Guy episodes lately. I really think I like Meg and Brian. Those stupid hicks should be jailed for the way the treat Meg.

I don't like too much either series, preferring other cartoons to them. If I really had to choose between the two, I would go for the Simpsons. At least I like Lisa

You are right when you say that Family Guy seems like a low brow version of the Simpsons. There are many show were the exact scene show in both shows ( doub it, check it out for your self - got to youtube and serch " Family Guy steals The Simpsons"). The truth is that the Simpsons is stupid buy it makes sense and it has a good scrip. Family Guy is a show were they joke about everything, even insulting. Which is better depends on the personallity and tastes of people. I preffer The Simpsons although i also watch Family Guy. "Simpsons Good, family guy okay, Futurama Great" boom "D'ohhhh"

Futurama is the greatest! I really find it hard to hear when someone says that The Simpsons is stupid though. Considering the insane amount of heavy social satire and the pertinent world topics that they humor. I find the writing for Simpsons to be tactful and clever when it comes to the sensitive topics that they deal with (i.e. homosexuality, corrupt election processes, crooked media sources, big business exploiting the common man and so on and so on. I've never seen the youtube video that you mentioned but thanks, I'm going to check it out right away. I really appreciate your comment, as it was thorough and informative. I also like when a comment lasts more than a sentence or two. Longer discussions really offer the reader much much more.

I do enjoy the Simpsons, but family guy appeals to my British sense of humour far more - it's quite dark and ironic in places whereas Simpsons is more immediate. I think American Dad is in a similar vein... - you laugh at the characters rather than what they are doing... I end up talking to work colleagues the next day about the whole plot of a Family Guy episode, I am far less likely to do that with an episode of the Simpsons. Family guy has 'remade' all sorts of shows including Star wars - imitation sincerest form of flattery and all that...plus it has Adam West as the mayor - top that Homer!

Adam West does indeed rock! But Homer has that darned crayon stuck in his brain, he is too adorable. I did laugh a bit at the Star Wars parody.

Simpsons all the way! It's just 100 times funnier and the characters are also a lot better in Simpsons.

Ick! Simpsons is way better than Family Guy any day of the week. Some of the topics on Family Guy are just so revolting that I can't stand to watch it.

Ick indeed. It seems that they sometimes recycle old simpson plots and trash them out for shock value. The vulgarity detracts from any intelligent message for me. Not that I hate vulgarity, it's just got to be clever.

simpson is a bit better in my opinion. at least it has some sort of storyline. family guy is random and it doesn't have proper storyline in my opinion. but some of the family guy episodes are really great i have to say.

Like south park said "The simpsons already did everything", so every episode probably has to be a remake. I like simpsons more than family guy anyways, as the plot is always interesting, rather than family guy who just throws random non-continuous jokes about pop culture at you. It is as if they get their jokes from manatees. Years later when family guy gets cancelled AGAIN, simpsons will probably still be airing.

I'm glad you still know the awesomeness of The Simpsons. What is it that you prefer about Family guy though, have I missed something? I just want to know other peoples opinions. Thanks for your response.

Yet again, I have found an issue to be in-between with. I'm one who appreciates what The Simpsons has to offer, but yes the ideas are getting a little stale with that show. I'm more of the classic episodes of The Simpsons, as I really don't watch all too much of the newer episodes unfortunately. As I stated in another forum similar to this discussion, The Simpsons has been on TV for more than a decade, thus giving the show staying power, with that good old family values, etc. material. Now Family Guy is great to watch, however I'm not one to get really involved with that show. Don't get me wrong, Family Guy has some merit to its prowess, but I think that show is just created to take a jab at certain points in society/ societal figures. The show has a different angle to it, that's all, something to the extent of an "edgier", risky, humour. I suppose you could say society influences Family Guy a lot more than that of the The Simpsons, because of the more realistic approach to involve real-life characters into the Family Guy world. If people like Family Guy or The Simpsons, that is awesome! TV is meant to be an entertainment medium, not a source of media that should be straight-cut, whether you watch one show more than the other. I enjoy both shows, even though the presentation styles/ writing is a little diversified between both shows. Hopefully, both shows will continue to run for a few more years time, so that they can be appreciated. Awards shouldn't matter either to show the merit or love for a show. I would rather enjoy what the writers and animators produce for the world to see, rather than hope that the shows win dozens of awards. Overall, if you love the shows, keep watching them. In the end the viewer ultimately chooses how long the shows continue to remain on television. Happy viewing to all!

I don't understand how you could view The Simpsons as stupid. It seems to me that for more than a decade it has been one of the most intellectually driven tv shows there is. The Simpsons constantly challenges pertinent social and political issues in a very clever, understandable , but subtle way. The lesser intelligent characters are suppose to juxtapose the complex stories and highly intelligent content with real life american stereotypes. Homer for instance is just about as dumb a hick as every dumb hick I've ever met. It's a great portrait of the crud that keeps driving the united states. I am really impressed that you spoke your mind so honestly. I wish more people were brave enough to say what they really want without holding back. Oh and if you really want to make sure your husband doesn't get any more stupid, keep him away from garbage like American Idle or Survivor and especially Lost! Get him some Star Trek instead.

Maybe they have many of the same people that worked to create Simpsons in there and the humor leaks in. BUT I love the Simpsons but I must say the 90s Simpsons is WAY better then the new Simpson and Family Guy feels like Im taking nothing and just wasting my time--its just not funny to me and to me it seems like their trying to hard to be funny but maybe like another poster said, British humor? I love the car show over in Britian, thats hilarious, grew up watching You are being Served

I much prefer The Simpsons compared to Family Guy. The Simpsons has been on for 20 years now so it must be doing something right. I find Family Guy to copy too many things and to be too low-brow. I can see the humor in Family Guy but the Simpsons is definitely better. Perhaps it is the fact that Family Guy is a newer series that makes it a favorite of some people.

I think Family Guy is better because it appeals to an older audience and has some funnier stuff, the simpsons bores me now and is just predictable on what is going to happen, Family Guy shocks me with some of the stuff they put into the show which is why i like it better than the simpsons.

I think Family Guy is much more witty and intelligent, however some things on the Simpsons just set me off.
