From a newspaper, a Chinese new immigrant owed some $1,6000 to the credit cards. He didn't even know that he has owed that much money, since he never check on his credit report, and he has problem in speaking English. Sometimes, he told the interpreter, he gave out his social security number to someone who is willing to help him to manage some applications. He suspected that is why his identity was stolen by someone. He afraid to report to police, because he afraid that he doesn't speak English. That is a sad story to be heard. Now, those perpetrator focus on foreigners, who has language problems, and take advantage of them. Never, never give out your social security number easily to someone else. Make sure you have to check your annual credit report quarterly, to see if some listings that are not belong to you.

Very good advice. Scammers will always go for the most vulnerable first. Unfortunately this guy didn't speak English well, if at all, and thus he was vulnerable. Hopefully this guy is able to get this mess fixed.

You are right, it is not save to give out your personal information over the phone. I used to get a phone call said I owe this much and that much of amount and need to be collect. I said, where did you calling from? and what creditor did I owe? he didn't even give me enough information but keep asking me to pay and then I got mad so bad. I said, If you dont give me enough information then I will not give out anything to you... he said, I owe the bank money and now the bank needs it back and now, right now... and ask me for my debt card to charge. I said I need to speak to your supervisor or manager. He said i said will, I do but before I pay then I need to know what I am paying for. So he hung up on me and I call to find out... and actually they bank made a mistake and they will send me some paper to prove that everything is alright with my credit. Plus I also i have credit monitor through my bank and every time I have something go through my credit then they will notify me right the way. The safe way is to protect yourself now cuz the economy is so bad, so bad people will take just about anything to get money... becareful
