How many U.S. presidents have been impeached? How many have been removed from or left office as a result. Why were they impeached?

Only two U.S. Presidents have been impeached (impeachment being only the indictment, not removal from office), Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998. Neither was removed from office after a hearing in the Senate failed to carry the charges. Technically, any member of the government can be impeached, but only one cabinet officer, one Senator, and one Supreme Court justice have also been impeached.
