Secure online websites

Hi, There are many online websites which appear with the link code : https, which is generally considered as a symbol of security. But we do not have more number of https online websites. Does this mean that only those sites which has the code https are the trusted ones? Are all the http websites insecure? What actually is the difference between http and https websites?
