Will I have to wear retainers forever?

I have had braces on my teeth for 3 1/2 years, and they will be coming off hopefully in a few month. I'm happy for that, as they are a real pain. But a fe people have told me that when I get the retainers I will have to wear them for the rest of my life. Is this true? I wish the orthodontist had told me that before I got the braces, as I probably would have changed my mind.

I've had braces when I was a kid, and I also had to wear a retainer but only at night. I have a friend who just got her braces off, and she is 42!!! She also wore a retainer at night, but doesn't have to wear it at all now. I also never needed the retainer anymore. I'm glad the orthodontist didn't tell you anything like that, because you probably needed the braces, and you'll be glad you got them when they come off! Seriously, I never heard of anyone wearing them forever. Good luck to you!!

I'm glad I won't have to wear it forever. Thanks for the encouragement. I know I did need the braces, but I'm the kind of person who doesn't like longterm commitments, so I was getting pretty discouraged. Especially since they told me it would only be two and a half years, and I've already had them on for 3 and a hlf years.
