I also experienced the same thing before... I was panic... But I still trust with "free AVG". Then I change my behavior before connected to World of Internet. Do a backup of your important data and saved in other media CD/DVD, always updated the virus definitions and report to AVG support/service. Now I do need to worry anymore because using ubuntu linux.

If there is still the Virus try to run HijackThis and let scan the log file, the safest way is still to format your PC. My best experience i had with symmantec Products. If you only want to test Software try a Virtual Machine, every thing you do there have no effects on your real system. Spam28

I have been using the AVG for a long time.It is a good antivirus provided we buy the complete back with the complete feature to take care of the malwares and spywares along with the regular scanning. It will cost only Rs2000/ nearly for one year. But we are paying for the peace of mind of course.

Before downloading make sure it's from a trusted site. Also it might be that it's not a virus but adware or something else.Try using some online scan and see what it is and if nothing works then restore your PC to earlier date and backup your data.I hope this would work otherwise you need to format your hard drive.

The problem with these free anti-virus like AVG is that they give only limited protection. If you want to keep your computer secure against all online threats then you should consider buying anti-virus software like quick-heal or kaspersky. It is much better to spend some money on buying anti-virus software rather than cleaning the mess afterwords.

I run more than one program because one program cannot do it all. Try getting free versions of spybot and adaware to enhance your AVG. Run Spybot and Adaware first and then do the AVG.
