I have 2 dogs, and the older one was trained by a trainer at petsmart. She is now 2 years old and she was trained at the age of 4 mouths. So it has been awhile, but she has remembered all the commands since then. The younger of the tow, I never took her to get trained, as I taught her the commands myself. She is doing pretty good, except she doesn't know how to roll over. She just can't grasp it for some reason. I really don't worry about it though, as all in all she is a good dog, and so it the older one. They are my companions since I live alone and I am glad that I have them. Take care, and happy mylotting.

A dog should be trained that's for sure, but my personal opinion is - it's the best when you train your pet yourself. You will get a special bond with your dog. I had a German shepherd with the same problem as your dog, at first Dinga was afraid of other dogs, she would just panic if she saw another dog, even a small one. In my case, I just was patient and gave her time. As she grew older, Dinga got confidence in herself. Another thing - somehow she felt that that her fear of other dogs really upset me and it made it worse. Just let your dog know that you still love her and it's ok if she panics seeing dogs.

However you choose to train your dog, you have to be the 'alpha female' to him. You are the leader, and that position shouldn't be shared. I would recommend training classes where you are guided in the training prossess. That way there is no confusion, or break in your dog's acceptance of you as master. Bringing a dog to have some one else training has to be confusing to the dog. Training Tukay was easy for me, she practically trained herself. When she was a puppy, I put a collar and leash on her. She wouldn't move for three days, not even to eat or drink. When I gave in and took the collar off, she obeyed everything I told her to do. I think she saw the collar as punishment. Later her vetrinarian diagnosed her with a collapsing trachea, so she shouldn't wear a collar. SOmehow she knew this, even as a puppy. Good luck in training your dog, with the correct guidance it should be pleasureable to both of you.

My dogs are similar to that. They dislike other dogs, and are really scared of them. I trained mine myself mostly, they attended puppy class and a few extra training lessons but that hasnt helped a lot. I would definatly recommend going to a teacher to help though, at very least it will give you more confidence at handling Lola and you will have more support and they can offer better advise.
