I think it still is expensive here. I know how much laptops cost in another countries and how much better the prices are. I'm from the Philippines and the way I see it, owning a laptop here is still a status symbol.

Russso, you can buy new laptops here in Cebu for around 20k. Netbooks cost even less. I really dont think having on is a status symbol. Our university caters to people of different social classes, but almost everyone in out batch has a laptop.

@ RANDOH: What kinds of laptops are these? Do you know the specific model? I didn't mean to generalize, but the status symbol thing is based on opinion and people that I've encountered - a lot in fact here in Manila, who but MACS and really powerful laptops, but do not even know how to use one. In the States, laptops are somewhat being made available even to students.

Some students get a reconditioned laptop from a company that sells second hand laptops. Other students bid on the Internet like of sites like E Bay. Many students go for a free laptop deal, like pay £20 a month on a 24 month contract that includes broadband access. In a shop a new laptop might cost between £300 for a basic one to £1000 for a top model one. A student would probably pay up to £500. Students have to pay their fees so it is amazing they can afford a laptop. I got my laptop free through the 24 month contract that includes free telephone calls. It was worth about £400 when it was new I think.

Laptops here in our country are still expensive. Only few students can afford it. Unless of course they have rich parents. Although there are new ones coming out at low price but obviously the quality and the specifications are not great. You would end up looking for something better.

Well, the price of laptops in my country is getting cheaper and cheaper. One can get a decent laptop from a reputable brand for less than $1k. In schools, I guess that most students are able to afford a laptop nowadays. Now, we are having our quarterly big computer and related accessories fair here until Sunday. I heard from the news yesterday that most will like to grab a bargain deal for laptops from the PC Show this time round...

Yes is expensive in my country too!!In fact i think that many students here have not enough money too buying a laptop especially when they are in the university or educational age!! Normally i saw some prices compare for example to some countries as Us and they cost less in dollars than here in our national money..so it is a pity but normally techonology is costly around the world so you need money to get it and use it as well!!

I own my laptop and there are alot of laptops out in the market that you can buy if you just save up for it. Its way cheaper now than beefore and if you really want to have one some will just charge it to their credit card. If you do not have the money then it will take time but nowadays there are alot of cheap laptops that are great for their price.
