Mitt Romney - what do you think of him?

I was just surfing cnn.com and found an article discussing a recent appearance he made. During the election I considered him. (I know I'm fairly liberal, however I'm registered independent - I vote for the candidate not the party.) I think he actually would've been a wise choice as president ESPECIALLY right now with our economic troubles. He also set up what seems to be a very successful statewide health insurance program in MA. (That state has more doctors per person than any other state and I think it was 8% of the population did not have insurance.) I know there are quite a few conservatives on this site, so I was wondering what they thought of Romney?

The Healthcare system in Mass was a fiasco, it is beyond the scope of this thread to go in to details, but suffice it to say, nice idea...poor execution. Though I do count my self as having conservative social ideology, I am not a republican. You have to start looking at things a little differently, not all conservatives are republicans, and the republican party is...well...not all conservative. Romney is a smart guy and a brilliant businesman I think he would have made a far better choice for Obama for either commerce secretary or similar post. I am personaly eyeing Wayne Root. He has been apearing a lot ov news channels lately and I think he may be poising himself for 2012 as the libertarian candiate, so he is probably the one I wil be following closely.

I liked Romney a lot but I knew the religious right would shoot down any chance he had to win the Primary because of his religion. I voted for McCain and HOPED that he would put Romney on the ticket as V.P. I still believe that he would have won the election if he had, but he chose to base his selection on party politics instead of choosing someone who actually had something to offer, which caused many Republicans to flip.

Do you really think his religion was why he didn't win the primaries? I really thought it was a lack of name recognition paired with the fact that the republican primaries were largely ignored by the media in favor of the Obama/Hillary story. I ranked Romney as the second best choice for VP behind Palin (Lieberman was third). I still think Palin was the best choice at the time, but it is possible Romney may have been seen as a potential savior after the collapse. I think the McCain campaign failed miserably to show how adept Sarah Palin was with managing the economy in Alaska.

I dunno...I thought Romney got a lot of attention from the press and the word "mormon" was inserted more often than not. I didn't notice any other candidate's religion mentioned again and again which is why I formed the opinion I have. He did lack name recognition at first but, imo, he made up for that once he opened his mouth and started talking about the economy. If McCain had paired with Romney they could have focused on his strengths when it came to the economy and McCain's when it came to foreign policy, the war and everything else without having to deal with the backlash that came with Palin. Those issues took time and energy away from the positive message the campaign should have been promoting. Instead, they were forced to defend Palin, then waged an offensive attack against Obama while he was able to stay focused on a positive message. People are so quick to judge the folks who voted for Obama (not you Taskr) but the reality is that negative campaigns turn people off and create distrust while positive ones do just the opposite.

I voted for Romney in the primaries in the last election and there's a good chance I'd support him again. I can't say anything for sure until I see who's in the running in 2012 though. I really think McCain could have helped himself a lot if he'd announced that Romney would be his treasury secretary during the election. I mean, who would you rather have running the treasury, a successful and brilliant businessman and politician, or a tax cheat?

I agree, it would've helped. I also was hoping (though I knew it wasn't likely) that Obama would pick him for the treasury secretary. I was surprised, he picked Jon Hunstman Jr. to be the ambassador for China (Utah governor).
