Ok, so I'm going into school debates with very little idea of how to argue my point. Our class was assigned several different topics for debate; however, we were not given a choice. I got stuck with fighting injustice against seals. Pretty much all I know about the issue is that they're cute and furry and some people don't want them being clubbed over the head. Fine. I understand that, but can any of you mylotters give me your opinions on this topic, whether for or against? I need to see passion for this people! It's a 'man clubs seal' world out there!

i personally live in norway, and must first of all say that seal meat i very good, but yeah, some of the sealhunting is rather grotesk, especially the canadian seal hunt is known to be cruel (im not saying that everyone there is mean:P) but you should search on youtube to get some personal impressions, so that you could go all fired up into the debate. hope you do good in the debate;)

Oh wow! So you've actually tried seal meat? That's different! Just out of curiosity, are there any flavors you could compare it to that I would understand? Also, it's true what you say about the cruelty factor, but really is any animal slaughter pleasant. Not that I have anything against seals, I think they're just as cute as the next person, but there needs to be a balance. I think it would have been easier for me to argue against them, even though I don't really want to argue either point.

well seal meat is a little "lighter tasted" than whale meat if you have tried that, if you havent it is kind of hard to explain:P but you should really try it some time, i am personally a strong darwinist, i believe that as long as we can we should eat it, and portion it out so that humans will be fed all the time, and slaughter is never nice you are right there, but i also believe that if you cant stand to see what you eat get slaughtered than you dont deserve to eat it.;)

I can understand that point of view I agree that it is right. However(and I include myself in this), I don't know too many people who would stand and watch an animal being slaughtered that they were soon going to be eating. I feel that many people would quit meat altogether were they required to watch the life drain from a creature every time they got a meat craving. A friend of mine enjoys doing some occassional hunting, and he doesn't mind taking people along; however, his policy is "if you shoot it, you have to gut it too." He believes that we should be responsible for the life we take. Remembering that there is an ugly side to it helps a person maintain respect for the life. This, I feel is appropriate. Sadly in this world greed is ranked so high above need that much waste results. If we only killed and ate what we needed for survival, then a lot of needless killing could be avoided. But, you are right. I don't mind eating what I haven't watched suffer which is an unfortunate biproduct of selfishly inclined mankind.
