make-up....really, what is the big deal?

Before anything, lemme give you a little info on why I'm asking this. I'm 16, a female of course. In my 16 years, I've yet to wear make-up. Ok I lied. When I was maybe 12, I had a huge zit right before picture day so I used some of my grandma's make-up to cover it. Didn't work out for me. Since then I've never even touched make-up. I don't even know what anything is. Concealer; huh, what's that? It's like a totally different language to me. Not sure if it's a weird thing or not. I admit I was sorta tomboy-ish when I was younger. I think I've grown outta that...but the make-up thing just still isn't my cup of tea. I was thinking a lot of women wear make-up because of insecurity, or they have some kind of flaw and want to cover it up. Which is understandable, I guess. But even now, I have a few pimples here and there, and some little scars and scratches on my face. But I'm no necessarily embarrassed about it. I don't really feel like I need to cover it up. It is what it is, I look how I look. I'll grow outta the zits, I know that. The scars and stuff are there for good. Why try to cover it up my whole life? Hopefully no one who wears make-up is reading this thinking I'm ridiculous or something. I just really don't get why women choose to wear make-up. I myself admit that many women look much more beautiful when they are completely clean and natural. But that's just my opinion. What is your opinion? Guy or girl, I wanna know what everyone thinks about this; it's been in my head for a while!

Well, me personally. I Think girls are much much nicer looking when they are not wearing make up. I really do find the natural glow very attractive. But I know many many girls, who can`t even leave the house in the morning till they have layered up, because they think they are ugly or something. To be honest I am as confused as you. But don`t worry, I won`t be applying any concealer to my face any time soon. Cheers.

Good idea; the last thing we need is guys going around worrying about covering a "blemish" or whatever you'd like to call it. Imagine! Anyway, I'm glad not all guys are attracted to the girls with make-up caked on their faces.. Wait, I just noticed your in Canada -- maybe it's just the American guys! lol (joking guys! =D)

hi jeneais, just be yourself and don't feel pressure to wear a make-up if everybody around you wears it!I used to be a tomboy person until uni time....I just applied lip gloss because my country is hot and humid. As far I remember, the first time I wear heavy make-up is on my wedding day..hehehehehe and now at this age I just wear lip gloss and lipstick to work. I feel more comfortable this way. My message: don't wear until you feel ready.

Thanks, azlin. I don't plan on rushing it. I guess when I need it, I'll use it. But until then, I'm happy with my natural face :)

I dont wear makeup. I know everything about it. I use to wear it alot when I was like fourteen. I thought it was necessary. Now I just dont wear it. Its bad for my skin anyways.

Yea, bad for anybody's skin. It's better to get a good facial cleanser and just wash your face daily, and before going to bed. A moisturizer would help put back all the vitamins and oils that the cleanser took out, too.

Hi, jeneias, me too I have been boyish since I was 8 and I avoid putting on make-up as much as I can. It does make me wonder too why some can manage to put make-up on on a daily basis. I understand though that on very special occasions, or perhaps because a person's job demands it, people had to wear make up. Other than that I just don't get it. Well I guess it depends on the person. And it takes a lot of getting used to. As for me though if it isn't necessary, I just like to be me and wear no make up. I feel lighter and cleaner without anything on my face.

I agree. And it's much easier knowing that you don't have to spend all that time putting make-up on. I believe if we just take good care of our skin, we wouldn't need so many of these concealers and things like that. Women are beautiful naturally, we're not supposed to cover up all our natural beauty!

i love make up! i dont go anywhere without my make up...i always wear mascara, blush, and foundation, either powder or liquid. but when i really get ready to go out i wear eyeliner and eyeshadow and stuff. i like the way i look in pictures, and i dont put too much on to where it looks like its caked on. i dont like putting too much on like a clown either...it just depends on your face structure and stuff...im thinkin since youre so young you dont know yet...but i could be wrong...i just love it and everyone i know does too...

Thanks for your response, brit_200. It could be that I haven't reached that "make-up stage" yet. I'm not sure. Most girls I know, my age, are wearing make-up and stuff. I'm just not into it. I like how I look naturally. I believe if people (and not just women, but in general) would take better care of themselves and their skin, maybe they wouldn't feel the need to cover anything up. Like you said though, I could be wrong. Anyway, thanks again for your insight, really appreciate it.

My father wouldn't allow me to wear makeup until I was 18 years old...isn't that brutal..hahah...All my friends were wearing them in highschool and I wasn't allowed...ofcourse, in retrospect i'm glad I didn't b/c I have good skin now while my friends who would cake makeup on their face have very oily skin these days...not sure if its related to the makeup though..Although just like you, I use to sneak some make up in once in a while to hide those pimples before picture day :) I agree with you in that woman do look much better when they are au-natural without any makeup on....young girls these days are putting way too much on...

Haha, brutal? Depends on your opinion of make-up! Teens really are over-doing the make-up these days. I think that's what turned me off of make-up. And yea, make-up is bad for your skin. It probably would make the skin oily, because the make-up can clog your pores, which holds all the oils in. Which is another reason I don't wanna wear make-up. Who knows what it could be doing to your face in the long run?? I'd rather NOT take chances!

To be honest, at your age I was fairly make up free and didn't get the deal either. The extent of it was mascara and lip gloss. Girls your age do look better without make up but thats possibly because you are still very young and have the best complexion you are ever going to have - 20 years down the line will be a different story. I'm now 29 and do use make up - though not daily. I strive for the most natural looking make up and at the moment am using Max Factor's Illusion and Miracle Touch range. When I was a child I had very blond hair with very dark brown eyebrows and lashes and as I got older my hair darkened to dark blond and my lashes lightened up too. I started to wear mascara around your age to frame my eyes as my lashes had lightened and you couldn't see them. I currently suffer with a health complication that I take medication for and the side effects are spots on my face - they're enormous and really sore - so don't assume you'll grow out of them because it doesn't always happen. So I like to be able to cover up, make my skin look more even and I always feel better with it on than without.

Thanks. Like I told someone else, it could indeed be that I'm still young and haven't grown into it. But I feel like, I'm so late in the "make-up game", when I eventually do need to wear make-up, I'm not gonna have any clue how to choose, what this and that is, etc. Anyway, I don't assume I'll grow outta everything, just these pimples (well, at least I'm hoping!)

Me i am also wearing make up when i go around or when i hang out with my friends. I wear make up in some important occasions. For me theres nothing wrong in putting make up. It doesn't mean that when you are putting make up, you are ugly or hiding something in your face. Maybe for other women they use it to hide their blemishes in their face but using of make up makes more a women to look attractive. It is a part of growing up. For me being natural is better but sometimes you need to groom yourself to get another look. Putting of make up is fun because you are trying to get different look.

Wearing makeup to me is like deciding to dress up. As you get older, age spots start to pop up. At one point I had a really dark spot over my right eyebrow. Makeup really didn't cover it and I started combing my hair over it. Finally I found out that it showed my liver was underactive. I had some lemon water every morning with a bit of cayenne pepper added to it. Within six months the spot was gone and has not returned. I like to wear makeup but it must be in a way that will enhance my coloring and features (maybe like my eyes). It must be done subtly so that when I walk in a room, someone doesn't look and think, "Wow who fell in the bucket of paint?" Also, when I wear makeup, I try to wear a brand that is as natural as possible. My favorite is Bare Minerals. It is a little more pricey but it really makes my skin look healthy. As for concealer, that is used specifically on something like a zit or a scar or in my case some dark spots. Most concealers look cakey and uglier than if you just skipped it. The Bare Minerals brand has a terrific concealer that is unnoticeable when used. If you have never worn make up, I would suggest you try to find a store that sells something like Bare Minerals and ask it someone would give you a free make up demonstration. You may change your mind after doing something like this. It is fun and free or should be. The only other thing to watch is that someone picks out the colors that are right for you. So many times people try to get me to try reds with an orange hue. My face looks terrible with those shades. For some reason the reds with a purple hue does the trick for me. On most days I don't wear makeup. I do try to keep my face clean and moisturized. At fifty-five years old that has paid off as I have very few wrinkles or sagging. Sometimes just for fun I enjoy giving myself a nice facial at home. Hmmmmm, that would be fun to do right about now!

Most women wear make-up to enhance their facial features. I do not wear make-up everyday, but on days that I'm in the mood to wear 'em, I make sure that my stands out. Some women wear make-up because they want to look prettier, which actually works.

I don't wear make up too, so i can't say that you are being ridiculous.. I don't like the stuff and i've wondered the same thing for a long time now.. Most of my friends and colleagues wear make up all the time, and i've been pressured many times to wear it, just so as not to feel too out of place when i'm with them. They say i look prettier when i do, but really, i dont think make up makes a woman more feminine or prettier or elegant. That notion is just what it is: made up.

Exactly. It's like a mask. You're covering up your true self. I would feel uncomfortable wearing it, simple as that. Someone said "I'm not insecure, I just like that I look better with make-up" -- well, that's kinda contradictory, isn't it? lol Thanks yeye, happy Mylottoing!

Ok, my opinion to this, is every one suit yourself... I have worn makeupp everyday since I was 9. Its not that I am insecure or anything, It just makes me feel so much better about myself. Plus I like to try out different colors without makin myself look like a hoe. Honestly, There are a ton of dirrerent reasons girls wear it, weather it is skin issues, creativity, just makes u feel pretty, or even like u said, insecurities. But I am not saying u should wear it. If u feel pretty the way u are and have that confedence, then go you.. Because confedence is really what its all about, and if u have that without spendin a ton of money, then great!

First let me say I completely understand where you are coming from. I think women wear makeup for many of reasons. for me I grew up watching my mom in the mirror getting ready for work applying her makeup and grew into a facination with it only because I wanted to be my mom . My mother didn't have bad skin at all, as a matter of fact at 60 years old she has the best skin I ever seen. I thought makeup was a beauty enhancer and I loved the way it looked on certian people. so I tried it for myself and I got so good at it, it became custom and alot of people compliments me on my makeup. Makeup is not just a cover up its also about skin care. if you ever get into make up you will learn that there is a process of keeping your skin healthy and some makeup protects your skin from the sun like sun screen so I guess its all about how you look at it. I love it, I love the way I feel when I put it on and I look Flawless... I feel pretty, and I still feel Natural and real... :o) PS the essence of being different is a beauty within itself...

I think a lot of us started wearing makeup back in highschool and then it just became habit. I couldn't honestly tell you why I began wearing it but maybe to look more mature...not sure. If you don't wear it....that is good and I'm sure its better for your skin not to wear it.

I really don't wear any make-up either. Ijust never really got into it when all my friends were finding their style. Now, I just don't really want to bother with it. I feel ok with how I look without it, and I figure it saves me some time in the morning getting ready not worrying about it. As far as what other women do, I fall under the to each his(her) own. Whatever you feel comfortable with.
