I am pissed!!!!

It rains a lot here in the Philippines. It is afterall the start of the rainy season. What actually pisses me off is not the fact that it rains a lot and that it is doubly hard to commute to and from work. What actually irks me more than all the discomforts the rain brings is the insensitivity of some people. The other night, I was on my way home from work, I had to battle a particularly strong thunderstorm. I usually take the bus since it was a lot faster. I noticed that the bus was almost filled to capacity and since it was raining hard, the windows of the bus were closed so the rain wouldn't drench the passengers. It was warm and stuffy inside. I noticed that the woman sitting next to me was travelling with a child of about a year or two. You could just imagine that the heat in the bus was hard to bear for adults, I can hardly imagine how hard it was for the child. Then the unforgivable happened. The bus was suddenly filled with the smell of cigarette smoke. I looked around and noticed this guy who had no regard for other passengers and was smoking his lungs out! And the child could hardly breathe! I mean while it is hard for us who were not smokers but imagine how it must be for the child! Out of pity, I opened the window near me (since the child and the mother were sitting next to me. I didn't care if I got wet for as long as we could at least breathe fresh air. I kept throwing angry glances at the guy. I actually wanted to throttle him! These people have no regard for others. There is a law against smoking in public utility vehicles but that is all it is- A LAW! Something should be done about this!

Hi scarletwitch12! It is very irritating indeed, particularly guys who don't care about the welfare of other people. i believe that's one of our bad Filipino traits, we are irresponsible and don't care that much about our fellow men. One more thing, though there is already a law about public smoking, the restriction is not properly being observed and implemented by our law enforcer. They will just take action whenever they feel or need to do it. Just look at some of these laws, pirated cd/dvd, wearing of seatbelt and motorcycle helmet, etc. The laws about this are continuously being disregarded due to weak or non-implementation of our law enforcer. I'm just happy that you indeed do the best you can for that child, without thinking if it will harm or affect you. Have a nice day!

You are so right! We have all the necessary laws but we lack the political will to inforce them properly! I am proud to be Pinoy but in times like these it can be a little frustrating! Thanks for responding! Have a great day!

Im not surprised about this kind of situation in Philippines. When you going to tell them not to smoke they will going to yell on your face to mind your own business and give you verbal abuse. It should be nice if the police are really serious about this LAW against smoking in public vehicles. It's better if they have a hotline or number to call to report this such a thing so that law breakers may lern their lessons. Have a nice day!

Well I guess there will always be rude and inconsiderate people wherever you go. It is far more important that we try to make things a little better when we can. I agree with you when you say that the way the law is enforced should be improved. Thanks for responding! Have a nice day!

The rain does have its charms at certain times. But it sure does make travelling harder! Thanks for responding!

Well yeah i have to agree with you on that. Smoking should be banned in Public places and public buses are included in there. I just hope that the man you've been describing in here would finally be considerate. Well I usually travel by bus too but I do not try those that are not Air conditioned because it is there were there are smokers. Well good thing about my travel is that I am just several blocks away from work so travel is not that hassle to me anymore.

You are so blessed to live near the place where you work. I hope that smoker also tries to be more considerate next time. Thanks for the response!

That's true. I didn't even mind going home soaking wet because I chose to open the window in the onslaught of the rain. That poor baby. Thanks for responding!
