I have both but I prefer a desktop because the keyboard and screen are better and, for the money, you also get a faster processor, more RAM and disk space and the ability to add a wide range of sound and graphics cards.
What you pay for in a laptop is miniaturisation and portability but the trade-off is a poorer VDU (colours, size, resolution and viewing angle are hardly ever as good as a TFT monitor), a processor which is not quite as capable as that in a desktop (if it were, they would use them in desktops!), a limited range of hard disks and limited ability to upgrade the system or to add components.
