I have seen hail quite often here in Italy when we get freak thunderstorms. They are becoming more frequent in recent years. They were very common at the end of the summer in July and August but now it seems they can happen any time at all. They bring hail too. Not always with every storm but very, very often and the size varies..
I have seen hailstones as big as tennis balls which did a lot of damage to fruit trees. Luckily it was in an area where there was countryside and not in town. Four years ago though there was a terrible storm with hail which was much smaller but it went on and on and on for over half an hour and blocked up drains and caused massive flooding. The hail was still on the ground hours later too. I was at home at the time and could see it from my windows but I felt sad for those who were out in it

Are you sure you want to see it THAT big?
Hail does not come down one stone at a time and while you're tryig to catch one watermelon size, another would be coming down quite near, maybe in front of you and another behind and another to the left and another....

We get hail a lot here in texas. We have never had watermelon sized, but I have heard about there being softball sized hail in some areas of the metroxplex. Usually here we get golfball size, and that is big enough to do some damange. I can't imagine watermelon sized hail. Talk about dangerous and ouch.

The biggest hail that I have ever seen was probably about the size of a golf ball. That was in Missouri when I was on vacation. Not fun to drive to your vacation destination in such huge hail. We actually had to pull over for that one. We have never had hail that huge anywhere that I have ever lived.
I lived in South Carolina over the winter. The largest hail we got while I was living there was about the size of a dime, except round of course.
