I was watching Dads Army the other day and wondering if it really WAS like that

I know what my Grandad used to tell us, he told us that they (the Home Guard) used guns with rusty bayonettes and no bullets, apparently the idea was to stab the enemy with the rusty bayonette and hope that they got tetanus. ;P (I'm sure Mum will correct me if I'm wrong, it's late and I'm sleepy). Do you have any facts/stories etc about the Home Guard at all, if so, would you like to share with us? Thank you. (Hmmm, now I've got 'Grandad' by Clive Dunn going round my head!)

I'm fairly sure there were some factual threads from those who were there and from those who were told what it was like that got woven into the scripts for that classic show..
