Summer Job

My 12 year old son wants a summer job. He and his friends are talking about trying to find a farm to work on where they can help harvest the crops. I don't know how to find him a job like this, or if I'm even comfortable with it... he just sprung the idea on me tonight. I know when I was a kid 11 year olds could have a paper route, but these days adults have all the paper routes! Does your child have or want a summer job? What sort of work do you think a 12 year old can do?

I think my brothers were about 12 or 13 when they started detasseling corn and walking beans. It is not easy work from what I have been told, but they did get paid pretty well. I can't really think of much that a 12 year old could do other than yard work or dog walking or things like that. Is it possible since you said your son is so good at sports he could get an assistant coaching job for one of the local teams. He might only get paid a few bucks a game, but it is something worth looking into. I bet he would love it too.

Most of the local coaching jobs are voluntary, although just to get him out for awhile he could volunteer to help younger kids learn a sport!

Goodness no, my kids don't want a summer job. We do volunteer for a no kill cat rescue and they like going there as long as it's not every weekend, but none of them want jobs. Not yet. What can a 12 year old do? Babysitting, house sitting, pet watching, yard work, odd jobs for somebody, idk what else.

I don't think he's ready for most of that yet. Otherwise I'd let him babysit his siblings! Yard work, sure, maybe, Odd jobs, sure. I'm going to look around, maybe Craigslist will have some ideas, or maybe I'll place an add for him on Craigslist to see if a farmer or someone else needs help.

In my home country teenagers can work part time from the age of thirteen years old. I did a paper round at that age and became a Saturday shop assistant when I was sixteen. My fourteen year old son doesn't wish to work because he is doing many exams at school. I think working teaches a teenager about hard work and the value of money. I think it is a wonderful idea for your son to get a summer job. It is strange that adults do paper rounds in my local area. It used to be all teenagers where used to live. Farm work like picking crops is damanding. Washing cars might be easier. I think that dog walking would be enjoyable.

Your son should be able to mow lawns. If he wants to work on a farm let him. I will say if he hasn't been on a farm before, you may want to let him go one day just to watch. The physical labor may be too much for him. I know my brother worked on a farm when he was sixteen maybe 15 yrs old. He certainly slimmed down and built muscles he never knew a person could have. LOL. Your son may enjoy it. You can drive him to your local farms and see if they need someone. The best place to find out about farming jobs is in your church. If you don't go to church take the direct approach and meet the farmers in your area.

We don't have a lawn mower, and we live in a trailer park. Over the next couple weeks until school is out I will look around and see what sorts of jobs there are for him.
