10 Tips for Getting Good Sleep There’s a lot of advice out there about getting good sleep -- and it's very important. We quickly adjust to being sleep-deprived, and don't notice that we aren't functioning at a normal level, but lack of sleep really affects us. If you're feeling blue or listless, try going to sleep thirty minutes earlier for a week. It can really help. Here are tips that have helped me get good sleep: Good habits for good sleep: 1. Exercise most days, even if it’s just to take a walk. 2. No caffeine after 6:00 p.m. 3. An hour before bedtime, avoid doing any kind of work that takes alert thinking. Addressing envelopes—okay. Analyzing an article—nope. 4. Adjust your bedroom temperature to be slightly chilly. 5. Keep your bedroom dark. Studies show that even the tiny light from a digital alarm clock can disrupt a sleep cycle. We have about six devices in our room that glow bright green; it’s like sleeping in a mad scientist’s lab. I have to put a pillow over the cable box. 6. Keep the bedroom as tidy as possible. It’s not restful to fight through chaos into bed. If sleep won’t come: 7. Breathe deeply and slowly until you can’t stand it anymore. 8. If your mind is racing (you’re planning a trip, a move; you’re worried about a medical diagnosis), write down what’s on your mind. This technique really works for me. 9. Slather yourself with body lotion. This feels good and also, if you’re having trouble sleeping because you’re hot, it cools you down. 10. If your feet are cold, put on socks.

I have thick hair and its hard to sleep with wet hair. I do drink lots of water before sleeping. The also problem is that I wake up during the dawn just to pee. Thankyou for sharing my friend and have a nice day!

Thank you for sharing such a nice tips on how to have a good night sleep. In my case, I can sleep soundly even if there are noises around me. As long as they are not touching me and not shouting too much I can still sleep well. I think listening to good music can also help someone to have a nice sleep.

Hi Zelmarq, There was a saying" Feel not getting enough before age 30, can't sleep after 30". I am not sure will i have a sleep problem after my 30s. But i am good for now, i love sleeping and i will feel sleepy if i did not get 8 hours sleep every day. Oh, one more tip: Drink some warm milk half an hour before sleep, it's good for your sleep too!

Hi Zelmarq, interesting tips. May I add one of my own, even though I don't have any problems sleeping, I used to do this when I had a stressful work problem on my mind. Concentrate hard on looking at a blackboard, until all you see is dark and black, this helped me, so I hope it can also help you and your myLot friends.

I guess it\s a good thing that I have no trouble sleeping :) I suppose those are good tips, personally none of those things really bothers me at all, when I'm sleepy I will sleep, regardless or in spite of lights, untidy room, lack of exercise, level of alertness etc. etc. etc. So far I don't remember any special time where I couldn't sleep which puts me in a very lucky place LOL

These are great tips. Unfortunately I don't normally adhere to #2. I do try to reduce the amount I drink after 6 p.m. but find it hard to do so completely. I wish #5 was more conducive to my sleep. We have a security light that the apartment complex installed. And although it's between the two buildings, I can still see it. And if the moon is first up, it shines right into my bedroom window!

Hi, zelmarq. Thanks for giving tips on getting good sleep. Some of them are really useful since I sometimes have trouble in getting good sleep because of nightmares. People often say our dreams reflect what we were thinking during the daytime. So my mind is still racing sometimes when I try to sleep. Then your No. 8 suggestion may be useful for me. I'll try to write down what's on my mind to see if it works. Besides No.8, No.3 is a good tip too. If we do some kinds of work that take alert thinking, we maybe still very excited when we sleep; and of course, we can't get good sleep.

Interesting post only to say I wish that were me. Unfortunately I work nights and when I come home I don't feel that much sleepy until after a couple of hours. Speaking about caffeine I haven't had any coffee in months. However, I'll take this in mind whenever I do go sleep. Thanks for this open topic.

I don't follow any of those tips, at least not strictly. The only thing I need in order to sleep is to listen to music. It's like a LULLABY. lol and I instantly fall asleep. I think it's cause it's distracting and soothing.

Good thoughts and suggestions. Also for those who have tvs in the bedroom. Turn them off. Another suggestion I have heard is to read a book. For some people reading puts them to sleep.

These are quite useful and thank you:) As occasionally I may feel sleepless, especially when I have a pressure. But here we don't agree to wear the socks when you are sleeping. If your feet are cold, perhaps it's better to use the warm water to wash your feet before sleep. I have heard that it's a very healthy way. I love China

good tips. I cannot make this tips because my body clock is abnormal. I always got home early in the morning because I work at night and 4am is too early to sleep and it makes me crave for a coffee because it is already morning. I fall a sleep at 7am in the morning daily and I will got up at 3 or 4 in the afternoon.
