What alternative health practices do you use?

Take vitamins as a therapy for a medcial condition? Use herbal rememdies? Go to a chiropractor or acupuncturist? Do you have a special diet you follow or incorporate into your life? Do you meditate or use aromatherapy or practice yoga for relaxation? All these are considered alternative health practices. They are not part of western medicine's 'approved' therapies. This is changing in some parts of the USA...but for the most part, doctors will tell you 'it can't hurt to try' or in some other way, subtly discount their effectiveness. What is your opinion? Are they effective? Should they be better researched? For instance, in Germany the government has highly researched herbs as a theraputical choice. Why does the American Medical Community not do this? Do you think they should?

I think that the United States is coming around slowly. The benefits of chiropractic work are now recognized. The benefits of meditation as a way to reduce stress is recognized. It just takes a lot of research and a lot of time for anything to be approved for use by the government. They want to do as much as possible to make sure that it is safe for people to use. So it takes a really long time. I cant wait until the benefits of massage are given more recognition! It can really do so much, but people just shrug it off as a luxury.

Then I see we agree more than we disagree. :) Anytime profit and money are involved I question the motives. Just look what greed has done to our economy....and the government told the lenders to give credit to those who couldn't afford it...does that not tell you something about the wisdom of accepting everything our government says or does? lol Sad thing is...we the people...elected them. Thanks for responding to my discussion.

I agree with you about the lending/housing. (But I wont get into that, because I could go on and on about that too! ) Thanks for continuing the discussion with me. I find that some people on myLot arent looking for continued discussions. Have a great day!

I use herbs and natural healing ways. I havent been to the doctors in 14 years and that was to have our last child. When we get an infection it is garlic that we turn too. I also take Omega 3 for my heart and a multi vitamin along with Super B complex and all of it seems to keep me on the road of health. My hubby goes to the chiropractor for his back and it has done wonders for him. Natural is the way to go in my opinion.

I totally agree with you, they dont look into the benefit and let people know that they can take for example: garlic for infections and to even cure thrush with little ones. The reason then we would just go buy a few cloves and not have to spend big bucks for penicillin or another prescription. Sorry to say but in this country it has came down to the almighty dollar!

I am just starting to get into the wild life farming. Getting to gether a collection of wild life food like herbs and finding out what they are used for along with fruits like elderberries. I rekindled my curiousity about this the other day over a dandelion that I repotted for my granddaughter. You might think it's weed, but it has many uses. You can actually eat it. It's just amazing the things I have found out about wild plant life. I am going to be growing my own picked from the wild garden.

There are many great resources for this type of learning...and yes, I eat dandelion greens every spring. I also use the herb for a mild diuretic when my feet are swollen. Good thing about using the herb instead of lasix or other chemical diuretics..you don't looose potassium with it...it's chocked full of that mineral!

Even dandelions out of the yard? Where would you go to find them at the market?

I go to a naturopath and a chiropractor. The treatments have been anywhere from extremely effective to somewhat effective depending on what they are. I have a Yuwie blog somewhere more or less on this topic. Basically, why don't all these various different kind of practitioners talk to one another and why doesn't insurance cover all of them?

The American Medical Association has decided they are not safe or effective. There are associations of alternative practicioners out there, I'm sure.

It all boils down to power and control. Two things the human race DOES NOT have a good track record on using wisely. The one's with power....make the most money....and gain more power. :) It has never been about health, human need, or what is best for the common man out on the street.

I havent used anything personally. However, when my son was born, he was allergic to all protiens. The formula he was on was amino acid based and 40 dollars a can. My mother had been going to an acupunturist for a while at that point and insisted that he go to her accupuncturist. The Dr. did accupressure instead of accupunture (no needles involved since my son was a baby) and, heaven help me, the stuff worked. My son can eat anything now. I will say, you really have to believe it for it to work When I went with my son, they had to get someone else to hold him because I was skeptical and it kept the treatment from working.

I love it when someone says "it all in your head"...lol. I have found that the power of the human mind and spirit is powerful! There is research on this aspect of healing too....something that is long over due. I have seen some of my residents...(I work in long term care) that give up...depressed over being where they are. They go down hill very quickly despite good medical care. Our minds are our best health asset. We have to believe we will get well. And babies are really in tune with their mothers. If mom is upset or scared...baby will most likely be too. Glad your son is doing well!

I used and eat lots of vegetables and fruits to makes my body healthy. I take a bath twice a day cos I lived in hot and humid are in this world. I love body massage, too. To fight stress I go to the spa one per month and I feel good. Acupressure massage is good, Hand acupressure and foot acupressure massage is good. Bentosa or Cupping is also good for our health. Me and my mother drink herbal juices. Yoga is also good for the body. Others they use crystals, others magnets as alternative practices for they're health. Some they have Medium spiritual healing power but I did not go there. I'm afraid to that practices. Have a nice day.

Dealing with stress is very important...we are only now finding just what kind of damage is done to the whole body and all it's systems by stress, from causing weight gain to suppressing the immune system. Stress originates in the mind. And our minds control our body. I feel that a person's 'spritual' state is very important to their health...but YOU do have to be very comfortable with that...it's a very personal thing.

Well, my first concern is my diet...and to that end, I try to incorporate as many organic elements...as my budget will allow. Fortunately, we have quite a few stores in my area that are either natural foods centers or many of the larger traditional chains have sections dedicated to organic products...so I can bargain shop. And because the quality of some of the foods that we use aren't giving up all the nutrients we need, I do take supplements. I once read an article that referred to modern medicine as the alternative health practice...and I just gotta agree with that. Modern medicine is big business, those large pharmaceutical corporations are going to protect their investments no matter what. So, it's really up to us [natural health advocates] to continue to support what we believe in. And that is happening, recently a Whole Foods store opened in our area and I was amazed at the turn-out. About 10 years ago another company attempted the same thing and were forced to shut down...folks just wasn't ready for it...

I have read that our food supply...the way we grow it, the way we process it does indeed make it necessary to supplement. The pat answer of "if you eat a balanced diet" really upsets me. Our soil is depleted, we over process to extend shelf life and add unhealthy fats and sugars to everything! Now we have to be concerned with genetic modification too! I also feel that each person is accountable for their health...BUT it is almost a crime that the poor are limited to foods that are killing them slowly. It is a difficult problem...education and a change of mind set from profits to health is needed. I live in Missouri...and have easier access to home grown foods. There is a controversy in my area about people buying raw milk. I've been watching to see what happpens. People are made fearful by misinformation on the subject of raw milk...my understanding of it is...if the cow is healthy...so's the milk.

I don't have any alternative health practices. But one thing's for sure; I will always need music to soothe and relax me. I find that a day of just relaxing and listening to nice and soothing music helps me to think better and do my stuff better later on. Herbs are good; I've heard of its good cause. I think my late grandma and the ones before that love herbs too and they were pretty healthy. There are some shops here in my country that still cater to herbs. Not bad, I'd say. A good form of healing.

i believe in homeopathy and find it very effective for my ailments. In India, it is widely practiced and has many staunch suppporters too. when my son was a toddler, he was afflicted with a nagging cough and fever which simply would not get cured no matter what medicines the doctor prescribed. blood tests were carried out, and the result was normal. that is when a good friend suggested homeopathy and to my happiness, within a couple of days, i could find improvement in his condition. his ailment disappeared altogether within the week and from then on, i have started taking homeopathic medicines for any illnesses. i think people should definitly give alternative medicines a try.

It is amazing to me that many people discount these treatments when they have been used for thousands of years, effectively and safely. I would like to see our modern medical community more accepting of ancient practices....to research WHY they work so well..and begin to incorporate them more into general practice. We are seeing more and more people using them...but because they are not 'approved' insurance generally won't cover them. This is a shame.

I think there is no problem use alternative health! This program can support the medical therapy! Sometimes this therapy didn't effect to make better! but most of medication from chemical will be bad effect of our body! Sometimes it can destruction part or our body and make it doesn't work effectively.Alternative health such as use herbal therapy can improve our body protection and it's out of chemical! So it can make our body health! It's depends on our believe! For good referent, you can ask the first time the alternative therapy would you try! Ask for the profit and lose of the therapy. What kind of material the use! What the effect to our body! If more profit you have from the therapy, you can continue that! If nothing you have, don't continue that!

You are correct that many in the world cannot afford even the most basic of healthcare. I too, think it is necessary to understand the culture of the patient when trying to treat them and care for their needs. There are many differences in how each culture perceives what is acceptable and what they are comfortable with. I see more and more that the great advances in modern healthcare are accessible to a very few of earth's inhabitants. I praise those doctors and nurses who travel far from home to bring things like anti biotics and clean fresh water and food...surgeries and maternal and infant care to people in need. I worry though, that much practicle and useful knowledge will be lost if we rush these people into western ways. As many of us realize already....sometimes the indigenous people know what is best for them.

I'm understand with your philosophy like that! I'm as care giver in eastern also have problem like this! Because the people had less money and they didn't have an insurance, they always tried to take alternative therapy like use oil, went to shaman, use herbal! and if the process fail, they will come again to us! it's difficult to lost it! In wets, the technical for medical therapy better from us! So least of people there will try alternative therapy! For the research of alternative therapy should be doing in country more of the people used that! We can know how many people use that and how many people success doing that! I think you know about trans cultural nursing. It's told us about culture in different country to treat kind of diseases!

That's great! I think all of an effect of the alternative therapy depends on believe of people whose use it! For the side effect of the therapy depends on how long and how many times people doing the therapy! In my experience, people who progress alternative therapy will back to medical therapy after they frustrated the alternative didn't work and made the diseases became worst! In this case, doctor can doing many therapy to help! An the last doctor suggest to palliative care! but sometimes the process of alternative therapy made people health and heal from the diseases! They're spread the news about success using alternative therapy to other people! This method make the alternative therapy become popular in society! As caregiver, we can't suggest or stop people to follow this therapy! We just give choice and suggest about profit and lose out if they stop the medical therapy! We just give that! Actually as a caregiver with knowledge of many kind of culture we must respect the culture of the people!
