Can a person be prosecuted for making false accusations about someone?

Hey Mylotters, I just want to know if a person can be prosecuted for making false accusations about someone? I realize that this isn't a legal forum and I may get some incorrect information here from some but I just want to open up this discussion and hopefully the people that are going around making false accusations about others will stop. Thanks for your response in advance.

A lot of things can happen with false accusations and legal remedies are certainly available. In less civilized places the actions taken might be drastic. Cheers!!
