I'm looking for some advice. I'm starting a new job where I'll be working 5pm to 5 am. I have not worked night shift in years. What are some of the things you do to cope with these kind of hours? Such as sleeping, family life, etc. This job is a union job and definitaly worth keeping. Thanks for any advice you may have.

My sister worked in a call center for almost 3 years. Most of the time she's working in graveyard shift, work on holidays and having a day off on sundays and mondays or thursdays and fridays. At first it was hard for her because she had to wake up and prepare for work when everyone's asleep. It took her a year before she got used to it. Most of the time I could only see her before I go to work or when it's her off. She usually fetch me after work, we stroll in the mall or try new restaurants. She quit working in a call center late february because she was offered a better job in the US. Now even if we're miles away with different time zones, we have more time chatting.

Wow..those hours are long and grueling! I would just try to get as much rest as possible. Black out curtains are good for those that work night shifts. I would also try to not forget to eat well..this may help with the energy thing. If all else fails I guess the coffee idea is a good one too.

That is a long work hour. And considering that you will be up to adjust to the schedule, your body will surely adjust to the kind of sleep you will getting as well. But to keep you awake during your work time, what else can i recommend other than a cupful of coffee... coffee... or some energy drink.

I worked in evening shift that begin from 7 pm to 7 am before. Though it's only a short period, it's agony and I don't want to find a job like that again. It's like I never have no life. Even I have time to rest, I spend it to sleep and sleep. When I wake up, it's already noon and need to prepare myself to get to work. I also need lots of coffee as we will really need to sleep during the night. Regardless how much we rest, it's never enough.
