I fear to eat cabbage, as one of my friends had cysts of hook worm, first in head from there the worm migrated to eyes from where it was taken out, and believe me still its head lies there, in the fore head, say docs! Oh god is it that dangerous! Eating cabbage, could you eat!

I like cabbage and carrots. I think the parasites are still there in the raw vegetables. I don't eat raw vegetables I prefer to cook it so the germs from it would die. It is scary to have hookworms from what I have read it can cause a severe anemia. Eating pineapple everyday is a natural remedy because it has deworming effect.

If you wash thoroughly the cabbage and carrot, the bacteria and the worm will flee away, and it is safe to eat,i eat it fresh an put some mayonaise ketchup. pepper and salt, and even i put it in soup and spaghetti and pansit, other vegetable cookery, it is a nutritious food and many vitamins that i get it from it.

I used to until reading this. I didn't know that that could happen. Make sure to wash all your food.

It would be helpful to better understand how your friend got hookworm from cabbage. The only way, I think, to get any parasitic or bacterial disease is if something was not properly washed before eating. I think perhaps the cooking part pertains to meats more so than vegetables. I personally love both cabbage and carrots. I prefer them raw or cooked. The other day, I happened to find some marinated purple cabbage in a salad bar at a market. I put some of that on the salad I was making and boy was it good. It is unfortunate and sad that your friend apparently got sick and had problems with eating the cabbage. Again, it would be helpful to know more details.

I never heard of such things before~~~ Even if it's true, probably the cabbage wasn't cook well enough. I love cabbage, raw or well cook make no different as long as it's prepare deliciously. Usually I stir fry it with oyster sauce. What about carrot that you mention in your title? Does it has the same worm as in cabbage too?

Hi dhawanbm, Perhaps the cabbage wasn't cooked enough. I have never heard of this problem. I sometimes cook cabbage in the microwave on high also, it must be covered though. It must be cooked well to kill any type of worms or parasites. I hope this helps.

I had never heard of this. Cabbage, like anything else, needs to be washed. I eat cole slaw (raw cabbage) often. The problem must be where and how it's grown.
