Is sweet basil the same as basil?

I think it is the same, never come across any basil that doesn't look and taste the same. In the area of Greece I live in basil is known as 'vasillicos' which means royal and they don't use it in cooking though may do in other parts of Greece, I always like to have some on the go for popping in salads and soups and actually had to buy it in a florists here, it is a revered thing and they grow it as decoration rather than as an edible commodity!
