Graduate school is a great deal about the ego of the department that you are interested in and the ego of it's professors.
Universities are all about research, and the ego is all about how well a department's or professor's research is known.
I would recommend being familiar with the current research interests of the department and its important professors. It would be good if your own research interests are aligned with those of the department.
A graduate student is like an indentured servant to a professor. You will work for a professor and support the professor's research. In many cases, there will be consideration about how well you will contribute to the department's directions and your professor's research.
So study the college and know their research interests. And try to help them see how you will help further their interests. But don't be so obvious that you are just sucking up to them. They do want creative and innovative people who also have their own ideas and will enhance their prestige in the future.
